| “Rural left-behind children” refers to a special group of children created by a combination of family and community elements in the context of contemporary. With the booming development of China’s cities,a large number of vacancies and lucrative wages in the cities have prompted rural laborers to leave their hometowns and work in the cities.Due to the high cost of living in the cities or the restrictions of the household registration system, rural migrant workers leave their children in the care of their grandparents or relatives, causing the number of children left behind in rural areas to increase.Childhood is an important period of socialization, and the long-term lack of parental care and attention makes left-behind children vulnerable in life, psychology and learning.Among which safety is directly connected to the healthy upbringing of left-behind children, which requires more attention and care on our part. The responsible and healthy upbringing of left-behind children is not all about the wellbeing of families, but about the harmonious and predictable future development of society. The social work agency in which we interned took the opportunity to undertake a project for left-behind children in village M.We observed and interviewed some of the left-behind children in the village and found that they were weak in awareness of danger prevention and emergency handling ability due to their immature physical and mental development, lack of parental guardianship, inappropriate guardianship, and incomplete safety education in school. The need for safety education is not effectively met. Therefore, the author recruited eight group members through group work intervention, and designed six sessions of activities based on social learning theory and the safety needs of the group members, focusing on topics such as drowning prevention, traffic safety, school violence, and emergency handling skills. The program helped the group members to fully understand the dangerous situations they might face in their daily lives, correct their wrong safety concepts and behaviors, and guide them to apply the safety knowledge and skills they learned skillfully and flexibly in their future lives. This paper finds that group work has strong applicability and effectiveness in intervening to raise the safety awareness of left-behind children, and that the flexible application of social learning theory helps to develop group activities and improve their effectiveness. It also reflects on the content, practical skills, and sustainability of the activities. On this basis,we propose to strengthen the quality of family education and guardianship, introduce professional strength and create a safety promotion atmosphere in schools, and strengthen the safety support system for left-behind children at the community level to help them raise their safety awareness. |
