Objective: In the field of motor learning and control, previous studies have paid more attention to the role and mechanism of vision in sport performance, because visual information is the main source of information for athletes. In fact,in addition to vision, athletes may also have the ability to use auditory information to make judgments about changes in the environment or the actions of opponents.Recently, some studies have found that auditory information is helpful to improve athletes’ judgment of ball rotation type, but it is still controversial whether professional table tennis players can use only auditory information to judge rotation, whether visual and auditory information have different contributions is not yet clear. In addition to the research on perceptual judgment level, there are also studies on motor behavior level that auditory deprivation will damage athletes’ sport performance, but it is not clear how the loss of auditory information affects the performance of motor skills in time and space. In this study, table tennis players were taken as experimental objects, and visual information and auditory information in table tennis were separated, and explores the effects of auditory information on the athletic performance of table tennis players in different visual condition by controlling for audiovisual information in early and real sport scenarios respectively,in order to further explore the role of auditory information in the athletic performance of table tennis. Methods: In the first part of the first study,31 table tennis players were selected as subjects. The single factor within-subjects design was used. The independent variables were stimulus types(video only, audio only, audiovisual congruent, audiovisual incongruent).Expert table tennis players were asked to judge the table tennis rotation. In the second part of the first study,22 subjects without experience in table tennis were selected as the inexperienced group in table tennis. This group only needed to complete the task of audio only condition. The single factor experiment design was adopted to compare the response time and accuracy of the athletes group and the inexperienced group. In the second study,26 table tennis players were selected as subjects.A two-factor within-subjects experimental design of 2 visual(normal/fuzzy)× 2 auditory(normal/deprived)was adopted.Expert table tennis players were asked to receive and serve the ball in four experimental conditions.Results:(1)In study 1,the table tennis players of accuracy of audio, video and audiovisual congruent were significantly above the chance level. The response accuracy of audiovisual congruent and audio were significantly higher than video condition. There was no significant difference between audiovisual congruent and audio condition. For incongruent trials, the decision making based on auditory information was significantly higher than that based on visual information. In the audio only condition, table tennis players had higher accuracy in judging rotation and longer reaction time, and the inexperienced group could not distinguish sound types.(2)In study 2,in the fuzzy visual condition, the athletes’ ball on-stage ratio, the accuracy of the landing points in the normal auditory condition were all significantly better than the auditory deprivation condition. In the normal visual condition, there were no significant difference in time-to-contact.While in the fuzzy visual condition, the normal auditory condition was significantly earlier than the auditory deprivation condition. There was no significant difference in swing speed and displacement throughout the swing.Conclusion:(1)Auditory information processing plays an important role in table tennis. The recognition of the opponent’s racket sound can improve the accuracy of judging the type of ball rotation and the timing of the ball.(2)Auditory information block affects the movement initiation and hitting effect of table tennis players, that is,the lack of auditory information will lead to the reaction delay of swing action, and reduce the rise rate and landing accuracy of the ball.
