With the acceleration of globalization, sports exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent.China has successively hosted international sports events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.Language is the bridge for human communication, and the development of international sports events cannot be achieved without the participation of language service providers. The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019 exposed the lack of emergency language services for international sports events. The current priority is to enhance the emergency language service awareness of language service providers, improve their emergency language service capabilities, and ensure the smooth running of international sports events. Therefore, this paper focuses on the emergency language service awareness of liaison interpreters in the 31 st Chengdu World University Summer Games, introducing the competency model of emergency language services for international sports events.A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was used to investigate the current status and influencing factors of emergency language service awareness among 205 liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games, and in-depth interviews with three language service personnel were conducted for supplementary analysis.Through survey research,it was found that:(1)the emergency language service awareness of liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games is characterized by a lack of theoretical knowledge and weak practical abilities.(2)There is a significant correlation between the emergency professional knowledge, emergency technical knowledge, emergency normative knowledge of liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games and their education level and professional category.(3)There is a significant correlation between the emergency conduct knowledge, emergency ethics knowledge, emergency professional knowledge, emergency technical knowledge, and emergency normative knowledge of liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games and their experience in providing language services for sports events and their frequency of participating in international sports event language services.(4)The emergency language service competency awareness of liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games is influenced by factors such as their professional category, education level, and experience in providing language services for international sports events. The survey research revealed two characteristics of the emergency language service awareness of liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games: first, their theoretical knowledge is insufficient and their understanding is shallow. The basic knowledge of emergency language services among liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games is lacking, and they have not yet formed a complete and clear theoretical understanding of emergency language services.Second, their abilities are inadequate, and the differences are significant. There are differences in the emergency language service abilities among liaison interpreters at the Chengdu University Games, with emergency professional competency, emergency technical competency, and emergency normative competency significantly lower than emergency conduct competency and emergency ethics competency. The overall competency needs to be further improved. To address the above issues, this study proposes three levels of optimization measures, primarily focusing on higher education institutions and supplemented by government and enterprises:(1)Higher education institutions should adjust their disciplinary divisions and curriculum settings appropriately and establish an excellent team of emergency language service professionals. They should also provide language service training for emergencies.(2)Cooperation between the government and schools should be strengthened to meet the needs of international sports events.(3)School-enterprise cooperation should be promoted to advance the construction of practical training bases. |
