The public space of the rural community is the gathering place of interpersonal relations in rural society, the main carrier of rural publicness, and an important field for the creation of rural social order.Under the influence of modernization, the "decentralization " of the countryside and the "atomization " of villagers have led to the gradual disintegration of the public nature of traditional rural society, and the "acquaintance society without subjects" has made it more difficult to govern rural communities."This makes the governance of rural communities more difficult.WeChat enables rural community residents to "cross" physical boundaries and participate in the construction of rural communities regardless of the presence or absence of villagers.WeChat has empowered the pluralistic governance of rural communities, which is of great significance to the reconstruction of public values in rural societies.Taking the Hui rural community of H village in Kunming,Yunnan Province as the object of study, this paper uses field fieldwork as the main method and online ethnography as a supplement to explore how WeChat is embedded in villagers’ daily lives, the functions of village WeChat groups, and the mechanism of the role of online public space in influencing the rural social order.Firstly, the thesis takes the history of media change as a clue, introduces the basic situation of village H and sorts out the types of traditional offline public spaces in village H.Secondly, the thesis explores how WeChat is embedded in the online public space of village H,how WeChat expands the interaction space of online social subjects, how WeChat strengthens the commercial space of online public action, how WeChat builds the cultural space of "common presence",and how WeChat establishes the organizational space of direct access to governmental affairs. Finally, the thesis analyses the impact of WeChat’s embedding in the public space of village H.WeChat’s embedding in village H has recreated the public space scene and reconstructed the relationship between public subjects, but to a certain extent,it has dismantled the traditional rural order. The study concludes that(1)while the embedding of WeChat in the public space of village H has produced a series of positive effects,it has also brought about certain negative effects. For example, the migration of villagers’ online relationships may lead to their behavioural alienation;(2)the online public communication platform constructed by WeChat may lead to(trigger)the spread of undesirable value orientations;(3)the discursive rationality of community subjects must not be empowered by the medium to make inaccurate statements that may lead to undesirable disputes;and(4)we must be wary of the possibility that new media such as WeChat may collude with power capital and lead to the re-creation of power capital. To this end,the negative impact of WeChat embedding can be managed by strengthening the construction of community public space and regulating villagers’ interaction by empowering governance subjects and regulating their interaction rationality;and by rebuilding the public communication order, cultivating villagers’ individual discourse rationality and,as well as spreading correct values.WeChat,as one of the external elements in the governance of modern rural society, has brought villagers together in a ’common presence’ online public space, enabling the reshaping of the communal nature of rural communities and helping to recreate them.
