As one of the greatest creations in human civilization history, maps depict complex geospatial structures, convey the essence of geospatial relationships, and act as carriers and tools for disseminating geographic information. For high school students, maps are not only part of geography learning but also an essential tool for enhancing their geographic abilities.Map ability is a crucial geography skill for high school students, and the accurate mastery of geography knowledge and efficient problem-solving in geography depend on the effective development of map ability.Good map ability is also of great significance for fostering core geographic literacy. In the information era,the limitations of paper maps have become apparent, and the emergence of Web GIS compensates for these shortcomings, expanding map functions and promoting the widespread use of digital maps.As a new geography teaching tool,Web GIS also opens up a new stage of high school students’ mapping ability training.Education informationization and geography are deeply integrated to promote the integration of Web GIS and middle school geography teaching.Web GIS shows a strong momentum and broad prospects for development.Firstly, guided by constructivism theory, multiple intelligence theory, and modern cartography theory, this paper employs literature analysis to examine the current state of research on map competence and Web GIS and define their concepts.Map ability is categorized into five levels: recognition, reading, analysis, mapping, and usage.Five functions of Web GIS are summarized, namely map and query, geographic data organization, spatial visualization, spatial analysis, and intelligent mapping.Web GIS,as an advanced form of the third-generation language of geography, extends map functions and promotes the evolution of geography learning tools, leading to a new direction in cultivating map ability for high school students.Based on this analysis, the advantages of Web GIS in fostering map ability in high school students are:(1)multiple types of online maps, nurturing map recognition ability;(2)spatial visualization display, cultivating map reading ability;(3)multi-layer overlay analysis, developing map analysis ability;(4)intelligent cartography practice, honing mapping ability;(5)precise map query, fostering map usage ability.Secondly, this paper selected high school geography teachers and students in the capital city(Zhengzhou)-prefecture-level city(Puyang)-county-level city(Yongcheng)of Henan Province, and used questionnaire survey method to investigate the current situation of Web GIS application in the development of map ability of high school students, and the specific conclusions:(1)teachers employing a single teaching method that is not flexible enough;lacking educational training, and having limited professional expertise;their Web GIS application skills need urgent improvement;(2)students having weak basic knowledge and limited map awareness;their map reading methods are insufficient and their comprehensive thinking is inadequate;their understanding of Web GIS is shallow, and their interest needs to be enhanced;(3)information technology teaching equipment requires improvement. However,at the same time, teachers have positive attitudes and views on the application of Web GIS in high school geography teaching, and have begun to explore and apply it in practice.Teachers and students have a great demand for the informationized teaching resources provided by Web GIS,so Web GIS has a broad development prospect in the field of geography teaching.Based on these findings,we propose corresponding cultivation strategies for the five levels of map ability: for identification,we should nurture students’ awareness of correct maps and strengthen basic knowledge teaching;for reading,we must train students’ ability to perceive explicit information and enhance the extraction of implicit information;for analysis, teachers should present the development process of geographical phenomena in a three-dimensional and dynamic way, identify the causes of geographical phenomena by factor overlay, and deepen students’ overall cognition through comprehensive comparison;for mapping,we should encourage students to practice repeatedly and develop their information processing abilities;for usage, teachers must emphasize the standardized use of maps and promote students’ ability to apply maps to problem-solving.Finally,the paper carries out the application research of Web GIS in the cultivation of high school students’ mapping ability. The first step is to put forward three basic requirements of Web GIS application, that is,adhere to the course standard as the orientation, the teacher as the leading, the student as the main body.In the second step,Arc GIS Online platform was selected to construct the map teaching mode of "teacher-student interaction, integration of pre-class,in-class and after-class",including:(1)Teaching is determined by learning, and Web map and group collaboration function were used to construct pre-class mode;(2)teacher-student interaction, using story map and Web application to build the model in class;(3)Personalized guidance, using Web applications to build after-school patterns. The third step is to design the teaching case of Population Distribution based on the map teaching model of Web GIS to provide guidance for teachers to carry out the teaching of Web GIS map.In the context of educational informatization,Web GIS offers technical support for cultivating map abilities in high school students. For different levels of map ability,Web GIS performs various functions and implements corresponding training. This paper constructs a Web GIS-based map teaching model, providing a new approach for developing map abilities in high school students. With the support of Web GIS professional capabilities,it innovates map teaching methods in high schools and propels geography teaching reform to greater depths.
