As a practical way for members of society to participate in social practice and fulfil their social responsibilities, volunteering is increasingly becoming an effective way for youth groups to participate in society. As young people have immature physical and psychological development, are full of creativity and are easily influenced by peer groups, conventional volunteering services cannot meet the needs of young people for volunteering services.Social work, however, can be supported by scientific theories and bring into play professional power in group training and community activities to nurture young people into qualified youth volunteers. As a trainee social worker,I used participant observation and interview methods to understand the needs of youths for volunteering services, and based on the needs of youths and the resources available,I used the concept of "observational learning",which is an important concept of social learning theory,to understand the needs of youths for volunteering services.Based on the needs of the youth and the resources available to them, the four sub-processes of "observational learning" are used as the backbone to design the youth volunteering programme. In the training sessions, young people and young people and young people and social workers build relationships through icebreaker games, learn about volunteering through interaction, and stimulate their own resilience and skills through role play. The community activities,in the form of various volunteering activities, are dedicated to providing opportunities for young people to reproduce their perceptions and behaviours of volunteering in a real social environment,to meet the needs of young people for volunteering, and thus to meet the expectations of society for youth volunteering. To this end, social workers set up effective incentive mechanisms and play the role of peer groups to reinforce youths’ perceptions and behaviours of volunteering,so that youths can acquire the necessary qualities and abilities of a qualified volunteer through the interaction of perceptions, behaviours and the environment.By participating in volunteer training groups, young people can acquire the basic knowledge and skills of volunteering, and through continuous participation in volunteering, they can improve their interpersonal skills, teamwork skills and the ability to relate theory to practice.A reasonable incentive mechanism can enhance the initiative of young people to participate in volunteer services, and an effective participation mechanism can enable young people to establish internal norms to ensure the smooth implementation of activities. The involvement of social work in youth volunteer training can create a continuous channel of participation in volunteer services and create a good atmosphere for multiple actors to participate in volunteer services.Research shows that for social work service agencies, the training system for formal social workers and interns should be improved;for project supervisors, the administrative, educational and supportive functions of supervisors should be balanced;for social workers, the main role of youths in volunteering should be brought into play. The participation of social work in the cultivation of youth volunteers can promote the progress of youth volunteering and achieve the goals of youth inheriting good traditional virtues, enhancing their awareness of volunteering and their ability to serve,as well as their healthy physical and mental growth together. |
