| Middle school is the most critical transition period from childhood to adulthood, and physical and mental health is the foundation of an individual’s lifelong health. It is also a sensitive and high-risk period for alienation.Middle school students with high alienation will not only have emotional and behavioral problems, but even more serious ones may also develop violent and criminal behaviors.Painting therapy is a creative working method that helps to stimulate the individual’s energy, from creating and enjoying paintings to self-talk as a healing process. Therefore, this study will address the current situation and differences in alienation among rural junior high school students and intervene with rural junior high school students with high levels of alienation based on the use of painting group psychological counseling, aiming to reduce their alienation levels and promote the healthy physical and mental development of rural junior high school students. The study was divided into two parts.Study 1 measured 601 rural junior high school students in a township in Heze City using the Adolescent Student Alienation Scale to understand the current status of the overall alienation of rural junior high school students and to compare their differences in demographic variables. In Study 2,based on the alienation score of Study 1,40 students were selected from those with higher scores on the alienation scale according to the voluntary principle and randomly and equally divided into experimental and control groups.Eight painting group psychological counseling interventions were conducted for students in the experimental group. In contrast, the control group was usually taught traditional mental health education classes.A uniform post-test was administered after the counseling was completed to test the effects of painting group psychological counseling interventions. The results of the study showed that:(1)The group with a relatively high sense of alienation accounted for 29.5% of the students surveyed.Among the first-order factors, social alienation had the highest mean value, environmental alienation had the second highest mean value, and interpersonal alienation had the lowest mean value.Among the second-order factors, the mean value of oppressive constraint was the highest, and the mean value of relatives’ alienation was the lowest.(2)Demographic variables such as gender, grade level, who to turn to when in trouble, and academic achievement had significant effects on several dimensions of alienation among rural junior high school students,i.e.,the level of alienation was significantly higher for male students than for female students;third-year junior high school students felt significantly more alienated than first-and second-year students;the alienation score of rural junior high school students who turned to their parents when in trouble was the lowest compared to other options;the worse the grades, the higher the level of alienation. There was no significant effect of overall alienation among rural junior high school students on the variable of whether they were single-parent families.(3)The intervention with painting group psychological counseling significantly reduced alienation among rural junior high school students.Students’ total alienation scores and multiple dimensions of alienation decreased substantially after the intervention, and this difference verified the effectiveness of the painting group psychological counseling intervention. |
