Objective: To study the pathogenesis of diabetic arterial occlusion of lower extremities (DAO) and the intervention effect of Chinese herbs of Supplementing Qi and Activating Blood circulation. Methods: From two aspects of the clinic and experiment, to view from insulin resistance (IR), vascular endothelial dysfunction (ED), vascular apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cell and related gene expression., estimate the risk factor of the formation of diabetic atherosclerosis, investigate the protection effects and mechanism of Chinese herbs of Supplementing Qi and Activating Blood circulation. Results: IR and ED exist in both clinical simple diabetes and DAO, the arterial vessel wall in Rabbits of experimental diabetic atherosclerosis mould have severity lipidoses, calcification and overcast apoptosis of smooth muscle cell. The Chinese herbs of Supplementing Qi and Activating Blood circulation can degrade blood-fat, adjust vascular endothelial function and apoptosis gene expression of Bcl-2, Bax, relieve IR, inhibit overcast apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cell. Conclusions: The formation of diabetic atherosclerosis is related with IR, vascular endothelial dysfunction and overcast apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cell. The Chinese herbs of Supplementing Qi and Activating Blood circulation can adjust blood-fat, protect vascular endothelial function, improve IR condition, relieve and delay the formation and development of atherosclerosis.
