The Phonological Study Of Baishi Dialect In Xiangtan County, Hunan Province

Xiangtan County lies in the middle east part of Hunan Province,in the west bank of the lower reaches of Xiangjiang River.Baishi Town,which belongs this county,is the famous maestro,Qi Baishi's hometown.Baishi dialect in the county,even in the area of Xiang dialect is distinctive,but its research is still weak at present.Considering that and on the basis of investigating in the locality,we mainly describe the phonetic system of Baishi dialect.In addition,a comparison will be made among Baishi dialect and the peripheral dialects(other dialects in Xiangtan city and county,Liling dialect).Accordingly,we will determine the ascription of Baishi dialect,and discuss the reasons of the formation for it.We hope all these efforts will be helpful to enrich the study on Xiangtan dialect and Xiang dialect.The full thesis falls into five chapters altogether.The first chapter shows us the geography,the history,the population, the condition of language uses of Baishi Town and Xiangtan County briefly.It also introduces the present studies on Xiangtan dialect and the emphasis and the main purpose of our research.The second chapter describes an account of the phonetic system,the features of initial consonant,compound vowel and tone of Baishi dialect.The third chapter describes and analyses literary reading and colloquial reading of Baishi dialect.The fourth chapter is the syllabary of Baishi dialect.The fifth chapter makes a phonetic comparison among Baishi dialect and the peripheral dialects(other dialects in Xiangtan City and County, Liling dialect) to determine the ascription of Baishi dialect.
