Energy saving is one of the most hot topics in the process of economic development today. As the increasing price of raw material and fierce competition, the reduction of the economic cost is a crucial part of enterprise development. In the coal field, belt conveyor has become the main transport equipment. In order to meet enterprise’s increasing quantity of production, belt conveyor’s driving motors are chosen with a great deal of redundancy. Due to the unbalanced of coal mining, the transport volume of belt conveyor is not stable and the belt conveyor system is always in the "big horse-drawn small cart" station. In traditional control system, belt conveyor’s speed is fixed, which makes belt conveyor is operated in low load or no-load operation. And it causes to reduce the efficiency of driving motor and the utilization of electrical energy, consume a larger amount of power, and increase the production cost of enterprises. Power consumption reduction in the belt conveyor system has become an urgent problem and has attracted the attention of many engineering and technical researchers.Firstly, considering the stress and strain characteristics of the belt conveyor, the belt conveyor system is discretized into finite "mass-spring-damper" subsystem and the dynamics model of belt system is established. Combined with the model of driving device, tension device and drum device, the dynamics model of the whole belt conveyor system is established.Secondly, in the paper the electrical energy saving methods are discussed. The principles, application area, advantage and disadvantage of energy saving technology are analyzed. Based on it, the suitable methods are chosen. On the one hand, is proposed in paper to solve the problem in the starting process of the belt system. On the other hand, the reasonable relation between the speed and traffic volume is studies by the analysis of the belt conveyor resistance. On this basis, energy-saving belt conveyor control algorithm based on variable frequency speed control is proposed.At last, the overall scheme of the semi-physical simulation system based on the controller close-loop is designed and the the system debugging is completed. In MATLAB/SIMULINK platform, dynamic model of belt system and the drive motor are established. The controller is used by Siemens PLC300 and the corresponding PLC energy-saving speed control programming is finished. And the OPC communication protocol is used between the belt conveyor simulation model and PLC controller.
