Background:Needle stick injuries refers to caused by medical tool, scratches, etc, such as syringe needles, scalpel blades, suture needles pierce the skin or cause skin deep and bleeding, to bring an indelible physical and psychological harm, the nurse family returned to serious economic burden. The study of needle stick injuries refers to the ward nurses using syringe needle and venipuncture needle conduct related operations.Six Sigma management is invention by George Fisher in 1987, from quality management in manufacturing, a product of the evolution of quality management tools, business management practices and medical institutions theoretical guidance, but also means that a new management concept. Six Sigma management includes define, measure, analyze, improve and control stages. Focusing on all the work as a process, using quantitative methods, the quality of the most critical factors affecting the process and make improvements, so as to achieve better results. Objective: In this study, we use the Six Sigma management method, to explore the factors of affecting the occurrence of needlestick injuries, to measure the situation of needle stick injuries, to learn hospital occupational protection knowledge among nurses, to investigate the psychological state after needlestick injuries, to take corrective measures to reduce the incidence of needlestick injuries. Methods: To investigate the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Science nurse needle-stick injuries using questionnaires, selected departments high rate of needle-stick injuries, randomly divided into experimental group and control group. 60 nurses of experimental group using Six Sigma methods to intervene in 2013, 61 nurses in the control group using traditional administration to intervene in 2013. There were no significant differences in the number of cases and the number of needle-stick injuries and other groups in 2012.In this study, we use of Minitab statistical software to analysis datas, brainstorming, cause and effect diagrams and other management tools for analysis. Results: The results showed that the incidence of needlestick injury is at a high level, caused great threat on nurses’ physical and mental health; vocational nurses weak protection awareness; psychological pressure caused by needlestick injuries can not be alleviated. Sigma level of the control group(Z-value) in 2012 is 3.30, in 2013 sigma level(Z value) increased to 3.61, improving the effect is not obvious; sigma level of the experimental group(Z value) in 2012 is 3.33, in 2013 by applied Six Sigma management sigma level(Z value) increased to 4.43, with remarkable improvements. Conclusion: After using Six Sigma management, the needle injuries of the experimental group decreased significantly, occupational protection awareness improved effectively, knowledge and awareness of protection increased, psychological state after needle stick injuries also improved.Six Sigma management can effectively prevent the incidence of nurses’ needle stick injuries. Applyed Six Sigma management can effectively reduce the incidence of needlestick injury nurses, the effect was significantly higher than the control group.
