As far as most cities in China are concerned, the city spatial forms are changing rapidly during the process of the reform to a market-oriented economy. Taking the main cities in South Jiangsu Area as the samples, this dissertation mainly focuses the effects on the transformation of city spatial form caused by market economy and probes into the main characters and mechanisms of the transforming process.Based on the analysis of effect on the city spatial form, the market economy impetuses can be analyzed from two points of view. First is the gradual evolution of market system, the second is the process of marketization of the production factors. The impetuses on the transformation of city spatial form caused by market economy are building up. From the view of political-economic analysis, in the economic reform there are three factors that deeply influence the transformation of the city spatial form. They are as follows: (a) the decentralization and local competition caused by reform, (b) the increase of overseas investment and the development of manufactures relative to the globalization and, (c) the transformation of city building from project-specific to comprehensive realty development.From the reform and opening to the outside world, South Jiangsu Area starts the development on the way of South Jiangsu Mode and New South Jiangsu Mode successively with historical accumulation and depending on all kinds of advantageous conditions. The function of the cities keeps on changing under the impetuses of market economy. As to the political function, the cities became representatives of independent benefits and compete drastically, and the extrovert type economy of the cities developed quickly from the view of regional function, and he manufactures converged and increased rapidly in the city function of industry. Accompanied with the changing of city function, the differentiation of city space emerging and new types of city space came into being.Accompany with the rapid development of manufacture, the city built area of Suzou, Wuxi and Changzhou, the central cities in South Jiangsu Area, increased rapidly. The increase of industry land became the dominant factor of the extension of city space and the multiple-center became one of the characters of the city spatial form. Driven by the impetuses of market economy, the redevelopments of industry land in the inner city resulted in the adjustment of land use layout. The city spacewent up and density of central city space increase.From the general execution of the Regulations of Public Bidding and Auction to Sell State-owned Land-use Right, the land market came into a new phase. After the positive research of land market of Suzhou and Wuxi according to the original records of land sale, a conclusion is made that the land markets are in operation on the forming of city spatial form. The distribution of city density and land price are similar to the multiple-centre city model. The formations of city spatial forms are the results of the co-operation of general rule of market and the exceptive city legacies.Urban planning should keep on changing in order to accommodate itself to the new requirements of market economy and guide the city to develop in good conditions. In current situation, the goals of urban planning's further progress are as follows: (a) to establish a regional coordination policy based on urban planning, (b) to promote the city to develop in a compact and high efficiency spatial form, (c) to guide the city land market to develop healthily.
