Aiming at solving the problem that China's furniture design education severely lags behind the development of furniture manufacturing industry, this paper presents a frame of theory and prototype of practice, which is unprecedented in the study of related theories and practices for design education here in China. The development of design education after the European Industrial Revolution and of China's modern design education is the study background of this paper. It applies the research approach of historical materialism to make comparisons of differences of educational pattern and major subjects for design education between China and western countries.The paper is divided into seven chapters, which combine the formulation of theory with empirical analysis. It systematically demonstrates the significance, method and strategy of improving the competitiveness of China's furniture manufacturing industry through reform and innovation for design education.The detailed content of study reads as follows:Chapter 1 gives a brief and integral presentation on China's furniture industry background, design education background, research approach and significance of selected subjects of this paper. It initializes the research approach and framework and gives a literature survey of the present status of study on this subject inside and outside of China. Chapter 2 mainly focuses on the systematic analysis of furniture design education history in western countries over the past 150 years, individual cases from furniture design major in famous design-oriented universities, case study of an interactive mechanism between design education and furniture enterprises. Chapter 3 gives a systematic analysis, which mainly focuses on the furniture design education history of Mainland China, Taiwan and Honking. Chapter 4 locates the differences of educational pattern of furniture design between China and the western countries through group comparison in 8 aspects in order to have a definite object in view of learning and reference of excellences of advanced design education from the west, and making up the shortage of design education in China. Chapter 5 gives an in-depth analysis regarding to the curriculum provision, teaching method and case study of the furniture design education of China and the west. Key analysis comparisons are about the cases from design majors of 4 types of today's higher design education:high vocational technical college, forestry university, art design university, and science technology university. Starting with the educational qualifications cultivation from postgraduate, undergraduate and correspondence students, this paper strives to give a summary, analysis and clarification of the major subject of furniture design education from China and western countries so as to provide examples and concepts for reference regarding to the curriculum provision and teaching method for furniture design education in China. Chapter 6 gives a case study of educational pattern and curriculum reform practice from furniture design and manufacturing major in Shunde Polytechnic, focus of which is mainly about the domestic research and practice on the basis of learning of design educational pattern that China acquired from the western countries.Chapter 7 is the conclusion. The summary and conclusion include: reevaluation of the understanding of western design educational pattern, establishment of an interactive mechanism between higher design education and furniture manufacturing industry, exploration of pattern of training of furniture design talents in China, prospects of China's furniture design and furniture industry. This chapter also presents a framework of theory for China's furniture design education system.This paper is on the basis of combinations of theoretical research and specific practice, fieldwork study and online literature search, regional study and specific case analysis. Through the lengthwise and parallel comparison studies of furniture design educational pattern from China and the western countries, this paper strives to find out a path of development, which is most suitable for today's furniture design education in China, to explore a furniture design educational pattern in accordance with the development of China's modern furniture industry, to provide China's design educational development and reform with theoretical basis and practical examples for reference.
