The metropolitan area is the combination of a big urban core and its surrounding area which has close social and economic link and integration tendency with the core. It is a basic spatial unit used to do statistic and research activities of cities. Metropolitan area is a kind of urban spatial from when the urbanization comes to a higher stage, which has obvious character not only in the outer scale ie. form, but also in the inner quality ie. Function, this paper makes a professional inquire on the spatial organization of metropolitan area which was made of 10 parts as follow:The introduction is the first part of this context, which mainly explain the foundation and signification of choosing the title and the thoughts, the content, the methods and the areas of research.Chapter 1 summarizes the urban spatial organization and relative theories. It introduces and concludes the formation and evolution of theorical and model study on the urban spatial organization from the subjects of urban geography, urban planning, urban economics, economic geography and so on, which lay a foundation for the research of metropolitan area's spatial organization. Chapter 2 firstly introduces the concept and indexes of metropolitan area in western countries. Secondly, it analyses the formation and development of metropolitan area in America, Japan, British and so on; Then it probes the basic meaning and features of the metropolitan area's spatial organization and concludes the basic model and experience of the management of metropolitan area in other countries. Chapter 3 mainly analyses the developing features and driving mechanisms of the metropolitan area's spatial organization of other countries after the Second World War. According to the new tendency of the western metropolitan area development after 1980 Chapter 4 firstly analyses the phenomena of edge cities in post-suburbanization age, probes the reconstruction of the metropolitan area's spatial organization and sustainable development. Chapter 5 probes the developing features and evolution and rearrangement on spatial organization of Chinese big cities; it also probes the forming mechanisms, the survey and the planning of metropolitan area.It's a practical analysis of Guangzhou metropolitan area from chapter 6-9. Chapter 6 firstly elaborates the development of Guangzhou industry, the evolution of Guangzhou's function and the historical evolution of Guangzhou space; then analyses the scope and circle structure of metropolitan area and the forming mechanisms of metropolitan area's spatial organization. Chapter 7 analyses the feature of spatial change of gross population, resident population, which is based on the 3rd, 4th, 5th census data in Guangzhou. Besides, it probes the feature, mechanism and results of population suburbnization, and the regulating measures. Chapter 8 discusses the formation and evolution and current feature of industry spatial layout and industrial suburbnization's features, driving mechanism, regulating measures in metropolitan area of Guangzhou. Chapter 9 analyses the current features and questions of metropolitan Guangzhou spatial organization, then probes the city's developing tendency in the future, presents the regulating model, that is the area within around-city highway is the central city, the important constructing subjects are three vice centers of Huangpu, Shiqoao, Shilou and those important developing areas of Huadu, Zengcheng, Nansha, Tanzhou-Dagang, Conghua, Taiping, forming a city system , including central city-vicecenter-important development area-important town-normal town.The innovations of the paper lie in: (1) Based on summarizing and generalizing previous research achievements, the author newly discusses big city's spatial reconstruction in the background of globalization and information technology, urban space tends to be decentralized, but while material space becomes decentralized, urban functional spaces (control, regulation, politics, culture etc) are more likely centralized.
