University is a social organization with special missions and responsibilities. As a kind of social phenomenon and social activity, the organizational activity conducted by university for fulfilling its special missions possesses certain social basis, realistic content, specific form and objective effect as all other social activities. University missions are the objectives and values why the university exists, and in modern society, universities keep a closer relationship with the external world than traditional ones do. Under the background that it is difficult to avoid the social influences, how to actively respond to the social demands yet keep the independent characters and values are the logistic starting points of the research. From the historical perspective, this dissertation throws the insights into the transition of university missions, and highlights the characteristics of the missions by comparing university with other social organizations. It also discloses the perplexity that China's universities have been experiencing by expounding how values of China's universities are evolved and what crisis university organizations are facing.In order to achieve its own missions as a social organization, a university inevitably confronts the conflicts in and outside, which are uniformly embodied as conflicts of roles, power and culture during the completion of the social missions. By exploring the transition and existence states of the role and status of two basic groups in a university, the dissertation finds out that the academic researchers are not satisfied with their roles and status despite the improvement of their economic conditions, as seen by the failure to guarantee their academic power in spite of the multiple academic takes they bear. The conflicts in the individual role and between the roles of academic and administrative staffs are thus intensified, which poses the potential negative impact on the completion of the university missions. The conflicts among the roles normally come from the pursuit of power, and are intensified by the irrational factors in the power resource, power configuration and power execution. The power types of university organization are more complicated than general social organizations, as seen by the coexistence of the visible academic power and the administrative power as well as the pervasive cultural power. The power relationships in university organization display a kind of multi-directional network rather than a single-level structure with bureaucratic vertical ones.
