To become a powerful nation, firstly, education must be strong. In today's knowledge economy, intending to change from a big nation to a strong nation in human resources, we must put great effort on developing higher education. Accelerating the construction of high level universities is important both for improving the whole standard and for achieving the rapid development of higher education in our country. It is also a very important part of executing the strategy of Science and Education and the strategy of reinvigorating China through human resource development.Discipline is the basic building blocks and cells of a university, and is the basic unit bearing teaching, researching and social service functions of a university. Construction of discipline is the core and the eternal theme of university construction. Research organizations are grass-roots academic organizations created on the basis of disciplines. Discipline has great impact on the creation and development of university research organizations. From the perspective of discipline, discussing the development of university research organizations and finding out the complex relationship between them have very important reference value for high level university construction. This thesis is formed by two crossed lines. One line is the development of university research organizations which is the bright line of this thesis, started from the Middle Ages to the Germany university research organizations with national characteristics in modern times, and finally to modern American research university model. The other line is the development of subject which is the dark line of this thesis, interspersed in each stage of the analysis of the university research organization development. Through these two lines, researches on the complex relationship between the development of discipline and the development of university research organizations are provided. The whole thesis can be divided into six chapters. The introduction part mainly describes how the research topics are proposed and the choice of perspective outlines the current state of research and gives the ideas and frameworks of this thesis. The second chapter discusses universities and disciplines in the Middle Ages, focusing on the impact of discipline on the universities integrating the role of teaching and research functions. The third chapter deals with how universities became a conservative bastion and gradually lost the position of knowledge center because of the exclusion of new knowledge during the times when European social and cultural changes took place and how outside university academic organizations took the responsibility of universities to the center of knowledge and promoted the development of natural science. Chapter four mainly discusses the reform after the university crisis. Germany universities put forward the reform movement first. The research function of university formally established. Complied with increasingly differentiated academic and professional trends of discipline, the independent creation of research organization within the university was formed. Chapter five discusses during the "big science" era, the prosperity and impact of interdisciplinary in research universities, taking American research universities as a typical example. At last the author gives us a summary of the full text.
