In the modern age of globalization, there are plenty of uncertain fators, risks and crisises. Risks as influential problems exist across social life. Contemporary society has been conceived and reflected as a'risk society'. This brings together these researches to contemporary social theory, including surveying the structural change of modern society, reflecting the bad consequences of human practice and byproduct of modern development, disclosing the character and root-cause of modern risks, exploring the way out of risk society.The great change of modern society also leads to the shift of theoretical paradigms in social research. The'risk society'theorist Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens see the high-risk of contemporary society. It is assumped that risk must be understood in conjunction with a theory of society. They provide a new perspective to diagnose the role of risk in society, and consider that modern society has changed from industrial society to risk society. Beck's and Giddens'theory makes no doubt to arrive at the sort of theoretical depth and sharpen the research of risk.How to assess the western theory of risk society? How to understand the nature and cause of modern risks, and the relationship between risk and development? What can we contribute to enrich the risk society theory? How to analyse the risks in China based on the risk society theory? These questions are what in this thesis we'll try to solve. From Marxism, based on criticizing the risk society theory, we deepen the studies. Thus is the object of the investigation. It is meaningful in double aspects of theoretical and pracitcal to criticize and enrich the risk society theory.
