A Research Into The Development Of The Contemporary Port Economy Of Fujian

The port functions as a lifeline in the economic development of Fujian, which is one of the provinces with rich port resources and also one of the most prosperous coastal regions with the longest history of port development. With such advantageous conditions as boasting of a long coastline and directly facing Taiwan area, the port economy of Fujian, boosted by its relevant industries, has tremendously grown in total amount, making this coastal province one of the regions with fastest grown economy since the adoption of the reform-and-opening policy more than two decades ago.The economic competition in coastal regions is basically a kind of competition embodied in port economy. At present, Fujian' s port economy is right in a critical period full of strategic opportunities. Therefore, this paper makes a special study of the development of port economy of Fujian, an effort which would be significant in such aspects as promoting normal economic interaction and development between the two coasts of Taiwan Straits, improving the integral economic competitive strength of the west-coast region, pushing forward the unified development and all-round prosperity in south-east coastal regions and building up the mechanism of regional coordinated development, namely, advantages shared between the east and west regions.Guided by dialectical materialism and historical materialism, the theories on modernization, regional economy, and sustainable development as well as relevant knowledge of specific sciences, such as history, economics, transportation and communication, the present paper, based on an diachronic and a synchronic study of the development history of port economy in Fujian, involves such topics as the development strategy of the contemporary port economy in Fujian, the development of port-related industries, economic interaction in port cities, inland economy and transportation routes, and the development of normal economic interaction mechanism between the ports of Fujian and Taiwan, with its focus on a panoramic argumentation on the economic progress of the ports in contemporary Fujian since 1990s. Based on previous research, it strives for theoretical creation and breakthrough, so as to put forward corresponding constructive measures and provide valuable reference for both government officials and personages from different walks of life in their decision-making or researchconcerning port economy.
