How would the manufacturing sector in China implement the integration of its supply chain? How would the buyers in this sector establish and maintain partnerships in the supply chain? What kind of integration arrangement would be conducive to improving supply chain integrating competence? These pressing questions give rise to this dissertation.A review of the relevant literature reveals that many scholars both in and abroad have studied the issue of supply chain partnership from various perspectives. The unique contribution of this study is that it brings transaction cost theory, resource-based theory, strategy-structure theory, social exchange theory, asymmetric information theory to the investigation of the issue; and that it presents a relatively conclusive partnership-developing model incorporating various isolated relational factors into one business model and, through measuring the relevant determinant variables, discovers the relationships among those variables and also their influence upon supply chain performance. As an empirical study, the cases under scrutiny are mainly concerned with Chinese manufacturers in the capacity of buyers, the focus being the effect of partnership on the supply chain performance during the transactions between Chinese manufacturers and their main suppliers. In this empirical study, the model is tested with the raw data collected from 92 Chinese manufacturers using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, difference analysis, factor analysis, and ANOVA.The outcome of this empirical study indicates that the investment by suppliers in asset specialty has a clear impact on supply chain integrating competence, which in turn facilitates the personnel exchange between suppliers and buyers; that there is a positive correlation between the investment by suppliers on asset specialty and human assets and the buyers'manufacturing scale; that the mutual trust between buyers and suppliers contributes positively to the improvement of supply chain integrating competence; and that improved supply chain responsiveness helps reduce the inventory cost of the supply chain; and others. This dissertation contains a case study of the Nokia Xingwang Industrial Park in light of the outcome of the empirical study conducted and the related theories aforementioned. On the basis of the analysis, the author of this dissertation has made a number of suggestions for Chinese manufacturing sector in such respects as information sharing, information technology utilization, asset specificity, human asset specificity, organization issues, joint programs, confidentiality/exclusivity, supply chain clusters of enterprises, and establishing joint performance measures. In this sense the dissertation is theoretically as well as practically significant.
