Operating in the international construction market is becoming a pressing challenge faced by every Chinese contractor with the globalization of Chinese economy. Large-scale general contractors have to develop themselves strategically in both the international and domestic markets. Small-middle size contractors also need to find their niche within these two markets. But so far, the majority of Chinese construction companies (CCCs) are not really ready for competing in the international construction market in the sense of lacking theoretical or practical knowledge. Some theories and practical problems need to be solved urgently. In this background, this doctorical study selects internationalization of Chinese construction enterprise as the theme and aims to provide theoretical and practical references for the internationalization of CCCs by means of predictable research.The author developed a model–"Double-Diamond for the internationalization of construction companies"(D2fICC) so as to guide general construction companies how to analyze and enter into international market. This model is composed of three parts:(1) construction companies Double-Diamond model of host and home countries; (2) SWOT analysis model for domestic and international market.(3) on the basis of SWOT analysis, working out suitable internationalization strategy for company.Under the guidance of D2fICC, this thesis analyzes the international construction market, Chinese construction industry and construction companies under the international circumstance. This thesis conducts a thorough SWOT analysis for CCCs. On this basis, this research lists alternatives of strategies and measurements for CCCs. In brief, these strategies and measurements include two generic sets: the construction industry, and construction companies. This thesis takes the China State Construction and Engineering Corporate (CSCEC) as an example, and studies its typical international way and international experience. Analyzing and studying these experience and difficulties not only reflects the status quo of CCCs in the international market, but also supplies internationalization strategies with references.The results of this study have important theoretical and practical significance.From a theoretical perspective, the study expands traditional international trade theory and international competition theory, and examines the applicability of these theories within Chinese construction sector. The theoretical model presented in this article absorbs advantages of previous models, abandons part which is not suitable for Chinese construction industry, and enriches the connotation and extension of theory.The practical contributions made by the thesis are two-folder. This thesis analyses international and domestic construction market and construction field in detail and systematically. Thus it is invaluable document for understanding the international and domestic construction sectors. The strategic measures presented in this article provide specific guidance for internationalization of the Chinese construction companies. Companies can learn, understand, and work out suitable international strategy in accordance with their own situation.
