It's a significant phenomenon of family migration in the process of urbanization. Migrant workers of family migration are different from that of individual migration, for they have jobs and families in the city (town) at the same time, and they play more roles in city (town) life than in rural life, and their tasks in city (town) life are also more complicated. To migrant workers of family migration, work and family are two key domains in their city(town) life, which will inevitably influence each other. Keeping the balance between work and family is essential to the employee's health, family harmony and the efficiency of an organization. Migrant workers, as a special group in the period of social transformation in China, have brought tremendous energy for China's economic development. Whether they can get good relationships between work and family or not will affect the development of an organization, the process of urbanization and the construction of harmonious society. When comes to researches on migrant workers, previous studies are concerned with work or family separately, lacking of the interaction between their work and family domains. The dissertation aimed at exploring the work-family relationships of migrant workers of family migration, the effects of job characteristics and family characteristics on work-family relationships, and the correlations between work-family relationships, job satisfaction, family satisfaction, life satisfaction, turnover intention, poor physical health and poor psychological health. Based on the above analysis, the dissertation put forward the implications to policy-making and concluded with some suggestions on speeding up the migrant workers' adaptation to city(town) life and turning them into stable industrial workers. The dissertation consists of the following four parts: Firstly, based on both domestic and foreign literature on work-family relationships, the researcher conducted depth interviewing to 17 migrant workers of family migration on their working situations and families in city(town). The interviewing course was recorded by text. Based on the content analysis, the construct of work-family relationships of migrant workers of family migration was established. Secondly, based on interview study and literature reviewing, the researcher developed measurement tool for the following research. Through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, this dissertation came up with a method to measure work-family relationships of migrant workers of family migration. The final 17 items measure consists of two dimensions from the work to family direction (work-to-family conflict and work-to-family facilitation) and two dimensions from the family to work direction (family-to-work conflict and family-to-work facilitation). By using t-test and F-test, the differences in the level of four dimensions of work-family relationships of migrant workers with different background were also analized. Thirdly, based on information from questionnaire survey, the effects of job characteristics and family characteristics on work-family relationships were examined. In addition, the researcher not only analized the construct of migrant workers' job characteristics and family characteristics, but also analized the current situation of migrant workers' job characteristics and family characteristics. At last, the researcher examined the correlations between work-family relationships, job satisfaction, family satisfaction, life satisfaction, turnover intention, poor physical health and poor psychological health through structure equation modeling. The analysis was based on data from 432 migrant workers of family migration. The conclusions of this dissertation were:(1)Fourfold taxonomy of work-family relationships was found in migrant workers of family migration. The four factors were work-to-family conflict (WFC), family-to-work conflict (FWC), work-to-family facilitation (WFF), and family-to-work facilitation (FWF). The items of WFC were involved in time-based conflict, strain-based conflict and behavior-based conflict as indicated by Greenhaus et al. The items of FWC were involved in time-based conflict and strain-based conflict, but no behavior-based conflict. The items of WFF and FWF were involved in the work to family development, work to family affect, work to family capital, family to work development, family to work affect, and family to work efficiency as indicated by Carlson et al. (2)Migrant workers experienced infrequent conflict between work and family, but relatively frequent facilitation between work and family. (3)Migrant workers with different background (migrate with parents/parents-in-law or not, migrate with all children or not, different education background, working years, working hours, living time in immigrant areas, living condition in immigrant areas and so on) had differences in the level of four dimensions of work-family relationships. (4)Both physical demands and marital disagreements had a positive effect on WFC, spouse support had a negative effect on WFC. Job autonomy had a negative effect on FWC, but marital disagreements, spouse demands and other family demands had a positive effect on FWC. Job insecurity had a negative effect on WFF, but job autonomy, coworkers and spouse support had a positive effect on WFF. Spouse support, coworkers support, and skill demands had a positive effect on FWF. (5)WFC had a negative effect on job satisfaction and a positive effect on turnover intention. FWC had a negative effect on family satisfaction, a positive effect on both poor physical and psychological health. Both WFF and FWF had a positive effect on job satisfaction and family satisfaction. WFF not only had a positive effect on job satisfaction and family satisfaction, but also had a direct positive effect on life satisfaction.Based on the theoretical and empirical analysis, this dissertation put forward the four-in-one measures. It means that government, employers, family members of migrant workers and migrant workers themselves all should help migrant workers to get good relationships between work and family, and to improve their job satisfaction, family satisfaction and life satisfaction, to reduce their turnover intention, to promote psychological health and physical health. The four-in-one measures would benefit migrant workers of family migration, and speed up their adaptation to city(town) life and help them turn into stable industrial workers.
