The phonogram characters take a special role in the development of Chinesecharacters. As a kind of actually used characters of the Warring States Period, thecharacters on the Chu bamboo and silk have different nature compared with the charactersof literal book which inherited from generation to generation. The study on thechu-phonogram characters will help us to understand the actual use of which in theWarring States Period and the development of Chinese characters.According to the theory of Chinese characters formation, we analyzed the interpretiveChu-characters before2008.Based on the analysis of4498Chu-characters individually, wesummed up the phonogram characters and analyzed the different the combination model.The study Combined quantitative statistics with qualitative analysis.The paper includes about140,000words and is made up nine chapters. The firstchapter is the introduction to the general situation of the research, the study objectives,research materials, research methods and research significance. Chapter Two gives anintroduction to the standard of retrieving and analyzing and judging the relation of thehandwritten Chu-characters. Chapter Three defined the phonogram characters andestablished the principle of judging the phonogram characters, and classified the thephonogram characters into two groups by the nature and function of the components.Chapter Four explored the different formation model among the variant forms of thechu-phonogram characters. Chapter Five and Chapter Six entered into the componentelements of the chu-phonogram characters and analyzed the relations among thepictographs and the phonetic complement. Chapter Seven discussed the characteristics ofBianXingShengHua. Chapter Eight investigated the differentiated graphs which are alsophonogram characters. Chapter Nine made a conclusion of main research results in thispaper.There are some innovations in this paper based on the previous studies:Firstly, a comprehensive and systematic demonstration of the formation and thefunction of the Chu-characters help us to avoid increase the characters in error when studythe insular material.Secondly, special attention had been paid to the different formation of the Chu-characters especially the variation, the accumulation, the simplification, etc.The results of the work are as following: Firstly, According to the principle of judging the phonogram characters, thephonogram characters had been collected accurately.Secondly, According to the different nature of the component, the chu-phonogramcharacters can be classified into two groups.Thirdly, the using of the phonetic complement was very complicated and thephenomenon of BianXingShengHua is distinctive in the development of Chinesecharacters.
