As the world economy continues to rapidly develop, sport events have been promoted gradually to prosperity. Especially the large-scale sport event like the Olympic Games is becoming a token reflecting the comprehensive power of a nation or a territory. In recent 20 years China has played host to a myriad of large-scale sport events, such as the Asian Games, the World University Games and the Olympic Games. In the wake of such prestigious events, China’s sport management has accumulated much invaluable knowledge and experience. With such background this study tries to explore systematically sport event organization and operation directed by knowledge management theory, in order to enrich and perfect the theory of event management making the future sporting events more reasonable, scientific and regulated.Based on the theoretical link of knowledge management and event management, a whole new sport event model (simply known as the KM-SM model) is created following the combing and analyzing the traditional event management models. This article describes the KM-SM model’s mechanisms of supporting and running, structuring a set of evaluation index and doing empirical research upon the Sydney Olympic Games and the Beijing Olympic Games. The paper has 8 chapters in 5 parts. The first part is composed by chapter 1 and 2, elaborating the purpose and significance of the research upon knowledge management and sporting event management, and how they are linked theoretically. It is concluded that the employment of knowledge management by sport event is inevitably the choice and key factor of sustainable development of itself.Chapter 3 as the second part demonstrates the traditional model in its three forms, the flat model, the vertical model and the network model, and analyzing the nature and scope of these three models as well as their defects when applied to the economy of modern society. The third part composed by chapter 4, 5 and 6 makes the core part. It deals with defining the meaning, function and mechanism of KM-SM model, raising the 4 supporting aspects in law, institution, finance and human resource, and finally structuring the set of evaluation index subject to KM-SM model.Chapter 7 is the empirical research on the knowledge management of the Sydney Olympic Games and the Beijing Olympic Games. The eighth and final chapter will be one of reflection, summarizing all the main points of the article, reviewing the results of the study, while expressing the possible future direction of this area of research.
