Building space, thermal, luminous, acoustic environment and air quality are the core factors that compose the indoor environment. Those factors work together to influence the occupants’ perception and behavior like health, mood and work. The integrated relationship between occupants and building environment had long been acknowledged mutually by architecture, phenomenology of architecture, environmental psychology and theory of built environment, yet the methodology discrepancy between building space study and physical environment study, and the incomplete study of the types of occupants’ responses, had become the obstacle of reaching comprehensive understanding of the relationship between occupants and building environment. This discrepancy also hindered the scientific coordination of the contradiction between environmental quality and environmental load, and further, the discrepancy impeded the improvement of building sustainability. Thus, the integration of building space and physical environment, the occupants’ perception and behavior,to comprehensively study the quantitative relationship between the two is quite necessary. In terms of the public building, the building space design is flexible, the physical environment control is stringent, the energy consumption per area is high and the construction demand is extensive.Accordingly,it is of vital importance to study the relationship between its indoor environment and occupants.Office, academy and research building were chosen as the study subjects, because those types are most commonly applied in the categories of public building.Carried out under the basic conditions of single space, stable thermal environment and indirect sunlight, the study applied quantitative method to build the comprehensive relationship between multiple environmental factors and the occupants’ perception and behavior.First, based on the study of previous multi-discipline research findings, the integrated relationship between occupants and building environment can be concluded into three categories:the comprehensiveness of all the environmental factors that affected the occupants, the variety of the behavior types affected by the environment, and the interaction between the occupants’ perception and behavior. The comprehensive study framework is based on those three categories.Second,to test the study framework, three sets of laboratory experiments were carried out.The building space experiments had made a breakthrough on the traditional quantitative study method:the study had established the basic quantitative relationship between the occupants’ perception and behavior, and three building space attributes:dimension, enclosure and color. The short-term-exposure building space and physical environment experiment had made another breakthrough based on previous extreme high/low temperature and direct sunlight-this experiment had established the extended quantitative relationship between usual thermal and luminous environment and the occupants’ behavior. The experiment also proved the interrelationship between building space, thermal environment and luminous environment.Furthermore, the interrelationship had been overlaid with the comprehensive environmental perception model, which had shown the fact that in terms of the environmental overall satisfaction, the effect imposed by the building space is far more significant than that imposed by thermal and luminous environment. The mid-term-exposure building space and physical environment experiment had further proved the environmental perception results of the short-term exposure experiment, and the mid-term-exposure experiment had also revealed the effect of time that imposed on the occupants’ behavior. Finally, aimed at the office, academy and research building types and based on their environmental quality assessment methodology that mainly focused on physical environment and air quality, the study brought out the method of introducing space quality assessment, and proved the assessment’s importance in three aspects:the extension of assessment indicators, the adjustment of weight coefficients, the establishment and correction of assessment criteria.Based on the study, the comprehensive research on the relationship between occupants and building environment can be broadened and the public building sustainable design can be positively motivated.
