This thesis focuses on the evolution,features and functions of the themes of the figure murals in the tomb murals of the Liao Dynasty.Based on the art archaeology data,the research methods of art are studied in the field of art history.It is pointed out that the characteristics of the theme type of the murals in Liao Dynastyand the origin of its evolution which are caused by the mutual influence of multiculturalism since the end of Sui and the earlyTang Dynasties.In order to make a clear study of the development and evolution of the theme of murals in Liao Dynasty,this paper summarizes three main periods and five themes of murals in Liao Dynasty: the three main historical periods,namely a single early theme,an open mid-theme,and a rich late theme;the five themes of murals,which are respectful obedient attendants,numerous ceremonial excursions,the daily diet of Han nationality,the grazing and hunting of grassland culture,and the central plain style entertainments.The development of the three major periods and the characteristics of the themes of five types of murals have been used to support the development and evolution of the themes of the murals in the liao dynasty.The thesis is divided into five chapters,which are divided into periods and types.Chapter one is the introduction,which explains the origin,significance,method,current situation and innovation point of this thesis.The second chapter discusses the origin of the theme of murals in Liao Dynasty.Through the analysis of the generation of cultural features under the dual system of Liao Dynasty,it illustrates that the multi-cultures in Liao Dynasty have formed the diversified features of the themes of murals in Liao Dynasty,as well as the two types of themes of murals in Liao Dynasty,namely the theme of Qidan and the theme of the Han people.The third chapter is about the three periods and characteristics of the theme evolution of the burial murals in Liao Dynasty.Through the evolution during the three periods,the thesis discusses the unit,openness and the characteristics of richness in the early,middle and late periods;furthurmore,it expounds the influence of the three periods in the different stages and concludes that the change is from a single change to rich changes.Chapter Four is about the classification of the themes of tomb murals in Liao Dynasty,which summarizes the five types of these themes.Through the analysis of the content of the theme for each type,composition form,painting techniques and character image,the thesis concludes the characteristics and rules of these five types of these themes.The fifth chapter discusses the function of the themes of Liao Dynasty tomb figures wall murals and analyzes the contexts and characteristics of the theme evolution and the characteristics and rules of thematic classification in the three periods.It also elaborates on three main functions of the themes in Liao Dynasty tomb figures murals: one is a true reflection of the social real life in Liao Dynasty,the second is the improvement of the construction of the multi-ethnic art history in China,and the last one is the aesthetic understanding of Liao society.The research on the themes of mural paintings in Liao Dynasty shows that the diverse artistic conception,mixed social form and the unique grassland nomadic cultural tradition make the art of Liao Dynasty to be an integral and pluralistic complex.It is also an important part to lay the foundation of understanding the general art of Liao Dynasty style and construction and to establish its position in art history.
