This research is primarily focused on two ancient Vietnamese Chinese-language novels,Yue Dian You Ling Ji and Lingnan Zhi Guai, investigating the relationship between national consciousness and Vietnam's Chinese-language novels. This research, through textual analysis, relies on narrative research methods to explore the national consciousness revealed in these two novels, and to discuss how this relates to a shared national cultural identity,in the context of local characteristics, and national attributes. This study consists of five sections.Chapter One examines the various versions of these novels in order to demonstrate the continuing presence of a national consciousness. It is also a summary of the elements of national consciousness present in these two novels.During the dissemination process for Yue Dian You Ling Ji and Lingnan Zhi Guai, multiple versions were created and aspects of the different books were mixed together, causing the content to become surprisingly similar.By comparing the different versions, for example,by analyzing the changes to the table of contents, overall layout, comments and evaluation methods, and so on in the later versions, this author was able to uncover the writers' intentions regarding national consciousness.Chapter Two is an exploration of Yue Dian You Ling Ji and Lingnan Zhi Guai which addresses the construction of national collective memory and national cultural identity from two perspectives:first, the narration of myths and legends, and second, ancient shared customs and symbols. For example,it considers how common ancestors and origins and similar cultures and customs are an essential part of Vietnam's cultural roots.Ancient writers and scholars in Vietnam use their works to state and strengthen their own sense of national identity. At the same time, their constant references to Chinese writings and symbols reinforce their shared national identity.Exploring how people shape their own national identities,Chapter Three is an analysis of how the writers came to understand and express the concept of "self",as it relates to nationality,in their works. The writers used three different characters, the original ancestor--the Dragon Lord of Lac(Lac Long Quan);one or more national heroes who fight for independence;and the spiritual god of happiness,to construct the ancient Vietnamese national image and highlight the traditional Vietnamese desire and struggle for independence. Both Yue Dian You Ling Ji and Lingnan Zhi Guai have been altered and adjusted by different writers from different time periods, which means that each version has its own unique narrative characteristics.Chapter Four and Chapter Five are analyses of the specific elements of national consciousness in the later versions of these books.Chapter Four begins with an examination of the restructuring and development of the narrative features and characters over time, noting the variations between the original version of Yue Dian You Ling Ji and a later version,Xin Ding Jiao Ping Yue Dian You Ling Ji.Using the well-known story of Phung Hung as an example, this author, analyzes the organization and structuring of events and the descriptions, and identifies the narrative variations between Xin Ding Jiao Ping Yue Dian You Ling Ji and Yue Dian You Ling Ji.This section of the research also looks into how the newer versions emphasize national awareness and consciousness.Chapter Five examines the closing discussions at the end of each the stories in two modern texts,Yue Dian You ling Ji and Ma Lin Yi Shi Lu.These discussions offer valuable insight into the national discourse, which this author analyzes in this last section of the research.
