Psychological stress is an inevitable part of each person's life.Modern society is changing rapidly,competitions are increasingly intense,as a result,psychological stress is also more popular that impacts on the people's health,work efficiency and life quality.Students in the process of growth and social adaptation are facing with many tasks in their daily life such as completing learning missions,choosing careers,building relationships that make them more susceptible to psychological stress.Due to the limited awareness of disorders related to psychological stress,limited skills in coping with stressful situations and self-experiences with all kinds of copying styles both beneficial and harmful aspects,seemly making the stress more complicated.When students cannot overcome the impacts of stress,they are prone to fall into a state of emotional disturbances,more severe levels are behavioural disturbances,and even finding to death to escape from the situation.Currently in many countries,studies on the relationship between personality characteristics,psychological stress and coping styles are relatively complete,however,the study in Vietnam is still unpopular or conducted in a limited scope that manifests many deficiencies in both theory and practice.Therefore,promoting a systematic and in-depth study of the personality,psychological pressures and coping styles of Vietnamese students in the contemporary period is an essential and urgent task.This research selected 583 college students of Vietnam as the participants,used the questionnaire survey to discover the status of personality characteristics,psychological stress levels,coping styles of the participants and relationships among them to provide a basis for the psychological health education for students.The primary contents and conclusions of this study are as follows:1.The measurement tools in this study have the excellent reliability and validity,which are appropriate for Vietnamese college students.2.The expressions of types of personality characteristics among Vietnamese students are not resembled.Therein,the Agreeableness has the highest average score,followed by Conscientiousness,Extraversion,Openness,and Neuroticism;the personality characteristics of students have some differences in demographics.In terms of genders:in Neuroticism and Agreeableness,female students' scores higher than male students';in Extraversion and Openness,male students' scores higher than female students';but there is not a significant difference in the case of Conscientiousness.Regarding majors:in Neuroticism and Openness,social sciences students' scores higher than technology students';in Extraversion,economic students' scores higher than technology and social sciences students';in Agreeableness,social sciences students' scores higher than technology and economics students';in Conscientiousness,technology students' scores higher than social sciences and economics students'.Concerning school years:in Extravertion,third-year students' scores higher than first-year students';in other personality characteristics,there are no significant differences among students no matter what the levels.3.Most of the Vietnamese college students' psychological stress levels are relatively light,but there is still 4.8%of students stressed at a high level.Regarding genders:female students'psychological stress level higher than male students'.For majors:there are no significant differences among students of the majors.Concerning school years:third-year students5 psychological stress level higher than second-year students'.4.The student used many coping styles to cope with stressful situations.They choose coping forms from high to low are Problem solving,Cognitive restructuring,Social support,Problem avoidance,Emotion expression,Desiderative thinking,Self-Criticism,Social withdrawal,respectively.These methods show that Vietnamese college students used the group of Confrontation coping styles rather than the group of Avoidance coping styles;there is a noticeable difference in the demographics of using coping styles of students.For genders:in Problem solving and Cognitive restructuring,male students have higher scores than female students;in Social support,Problem avoidance,Desiderative thinking,Self-Criticism,and Social withdrawal,female students' scores higher than male students';but there are no remarkable differences in Emotion expression.In terms of majors:in Problem solving and Cognitive restructuring,technology students' scores higher than social sciences students';in Social support,social sciences and economics students' scores higher than technology students';in Problem avoidance and Social withdrawal,social sciences students' scores higher than technology students';there are no prominent differences in other coping styles.Concerning the school year:in Social support,first-year and second-year students' scores higher than third-year students';in Problem avoidance,Self-Criticism,and Social withdrawal,first-year students' scores higher than third-year students';there are no significant differences in other coping styles.5.In the personality characteristics of Vietnamese college students,the Neuroticism has a negative effect on psychological stress.In contrast,the Extraversion,Openness,Agreeableness and Conscientiousness have the positive impact on psychological stress.6.In the personality characteristics of students,the Neuroticism has a negative impact on the use of the group of Confrontation coping styles and has a positive impact on the use of the Avoidance coping styles group.In contrast,the Extraversion,Openness,Agreeableness and Conscientiousness have the positive impact on the use of the Confrontation coping styles group and have a negative impact on the use of the Avoidance coping styles group.7.The use of the Confrontation coping styles group will relieve the psychological stress and the use of the group of Avoidance coping styles will increase the psychological stress.8.The Coping styles play a mediator role between personality characteristics and the psychological stress.It means that personality characteristics not only directly effect psychological stress but also impact on the psychological stress indirectly through coping styles.
