University-industry collaboration(UIC)is a main pathway of knowledge and technology transfer from universities to firms, and UIC plays an important role in promoting scientific & technological progress and economic social development for countries and regions. In the perspective of industry, collaborating with universities is an important way to seek generic benefits such as accessing students and new technologies, and updating their knowledge, which could further the production and business model innovation of firms. In the perspective of university, collaborating with industry can expand the channels of research funding, help students to obtain employment, and improve the social reputation by collaborating with some star firms.Meanwhile, for university researchers, collaborating with firms may be complementary with academic research and expand the availability of financial resources and experimental equipment. Therefore,UIC is a real demand for industry and university. With the increase of university-enterprise cooperation in recent years, the study on university-industry collaboration has become one of the academic hotspots. Most empirical studies on the innovation performance of UIC show that UIC can enhance the performance of industry which is usually weighed by production innovation. However, there are relatively few studies on the influence of UIC on research performance of universities. Moreover, most prior studies have concentrated on advanced economies, and there are few studies that examine this question in China's context.Meanwhile, the influence of UIC on research performance of universities can be divided into the organizational level and the researcher level, but most of the existing literature has focused on the individual level and ignored the organizational level and across-level.This paper takes Chinese universities as the research samples and studies the influence of UIC on the research performance of Chinese universities in two level(organizational level and individual level)and the three perspectives of organization, individual and cross-level.Main contents include:First, the following concept is defined, including university-industry collaboration, research performance, social capital and technological capability. And the theories that are closely related to the content of this research are introduced, including industry-university-research collaboration theory, social capital theory, organization environment theory and the theory of multilevel, which are the theoretical basis of this paper.Basing on the concept definition and related theory, this paper constructs the overall theoretical research framework.Second, using 2007-2015 panel data of 88 universities in China and the method of Sys-GMM model, this paper empirically studies the influence of UIC on the research performance of universities, and the moderating effect of university type in the organization level,.The results showed that the influence of UIC on the research performance of universities was the inverted U-shape curve, and the university type had a negative moderating effect on the relationship between UIC and research performance of universities.Third, using the dataset of Chinese universities' researchers and the negative binomial regression method, the influence of university-industry collaboration on research performance and the moderating effect of social capital were empirically examined. The results showed that for the total research samples,UIC had an inverted-U effect on academics' research performance(h-index).Meanwhile,both network ties and tie strength had the positive moderating effect. However, for the engineering researchers,it was found that the intensity of university-industry collaboration had a negative effect on academics' research performance, and tie strength had its positive moderation effect, which did not support the moderation effect of network ties.Last, from the perspective of cross-level,using the dataset of Chinese universities and HLM method, this paper studied the influence of UIC climate of the organizational level on academics' research performance and the mediating effect of technological capability. The results showed that the relationship between the organizational level of UIC climate and the academics' research performance was inverted-U shape, and researcher's technological capability had the mediating effect. From the perspectives of organization, individual, and cross-level,this paper empirically studied the influence of UIC on research performance of universities.By introducing the university type of the organizational level perspective as the moderating variable, the social capital of the individual level perspective as the moderating variable and the technological capability of the cross-level perspective as the mediating variable, this paper reveals the specific mechanism of the influence of UIC on universities' research performance. This study enriches the current literature on the relationship between UIC and universities' research performance. What's more, this paper provided a theoretical basis and practical reference for the government and universities to make scientific and rational Science and technology management policy.
