The tasks facing Shanghai now are to build itself into "Four Centers", namely modern service center, advanced manufacturing center, international financial center and international shipping center. The accomplishment of these tasks requires Shanghai-based universities, especially those focusing on business education to produce high quality graduates who specialize in the area of finance, management, international trade and business.Due to insufficient collaboration between industry and university, university graduates often meet with challenges in job market. They find themselves either lack of skills for the jobs they are looking for or incapable of solving real-world business problems. To improve graduate competitiveness, universities should collaborate with industry and encourage faculty members to keep close contact with industry through consulting or involving in business practice. Our recent research reveals that majority of university teachers have little industry experience though they are academically strong. How to motivate university teachers to build their practical capabilities becomes obviously important. One approach is to adopt industry-university collaboration training program, by which business education teachers are required to stay in industry for certain period of time so as to gain real business world experience and be sensitive to business issues. The paper consists of four parts. Firstly it explains the research importance and introduces recent development of industry-university collaboration in China. Secondly, it collects primary data regarding practice of industry-university collaboration training program by questionnaire and interview. Thirdly, based on the data analysis, it summarizes four factors that influence the outcome of industry-university collaboration training program practice, namely personal characteristics, work-related characteristics, discipline-related characteristics and social characteristics. Fourthly, the similar practices of foreign universities are discussed and recommendations are made to improve the effectiveness of industry-university collaboration training program.Hopefully the research findings may be useful to universities in designing their industry-university collaboration training programs, and at the same time be useful to business education teachers in planning their professional development.
