Most emerging economies, such as China, regard the development of science and technology as the key factor in catching up with advanced economies. The gap between emerging economies and developed industrial economies is essentially a technological gap. Therefore, technology acquisition is important for the development of emerging economies, especially in high-tech industries. The high-tech industry is China's most dynamic and innovative industry, and its technological innovation plays a decisive role in China's overall economic transformation. In order to gain a competitive advantage in the market, previous research usually emphasizes the importance of independent research and development.Todayiay.with the development of economic globalization, enterprises not only have one channel to acquire technology. In the open innovation model, the technology acquisition mode can come from outside the enterprise. Therefore, the development of technology acquisition mode in high-tech industries can promote the transformation of China's economic structure and shorten the gap with developed industrial economies.Although existing scholars are aware of the importance of technology acquisition modes for business and national development, the main research focuses on the impact of technology acquisition modes on financial performance, and the conclusions are not inconsistent. Moreover, existing scholars have neglected the exploration of factors affecting technology acquisition mode.Based on theories of institutional theory, transaction costs theory, technology transfer theory and absorptive capacity theory, this study explores the antecedents of technology acquisition modes and their impacts on innovation performance of China's high-tech industry from a macro level.Specifically, this paper examines the above issues through three empirical studies.Firstly, this paper examines the impact of government policies on technology acquisition modes of Chinese high-tech industries.Based on the data of 25 provinces in China's high-tech industry from 2004 to 2014,this study empirically analyzes the impact of interactions of government subsidies and intellectual property rights protection on internal and external technology acquisition modes. In addition, based on the unbalanced development of China's eastern, central and western regions and the differences in the development of two sub-industries of high-tech industries, this study examines the regional heterogeneity and industrial heterogeneity of interaction effect of government subsidies and intellectual property rights protection on internal and external technology acquisition modes.Secondly,on the basis of study 1,this paper expands the research and explores the impact of technology acquisition modes on high-tech industry innovation performance, this paper uses 17 high-tech sub-industry data from 2004 to 2014 as research objects, and divides external technology acquisition modes into two categories:technology purchase and technology spillover. The impact of internal and external technology acquisition modes on the innovation performance of foreign-funded enterprises and state-owned enterprises in China's high-tech industries was also explored.Thirdly, based on the study 2,this paper examines the moderating role of absorptive capacity in the relationship between external technology acquisition modes and high-tech industry innovation performance.Through empirical researches, this study mainly draws the following conclusions.First, government subsidies play a significant role in promoting the internal and external technology acquisition in Chinese high-tech industries. The stronger the protection of intellectual property rights, the more it can promote the acquisition of external technology in high-tech industries, but it is not conducive to the internal research and development of high-tech industries.Government subsidies and intellectual property rights protection have a substitution effect on access to internal and external technologies in the eastern and western regions. In the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, government subsidies play a significant role in promoting access to internal and external technologies in the eastern and central regions. The stronger the intellectual property rights protection, the more internal and external technologies are acquired in the eastern region of high-tech industry. The interaction between government subsidies and intellectual property rights protection has complementary effects on external technology acquisition and has an alternative effect on internal technology acquisition in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. In the electronics and communication equipment manufacturing industry, government subsidies have a positive significant effect on internal and external technology acquisition, but there is a positive correlation between intellectual property rights protection and external technology acquisition only, and there is no significant relationship with internal technology acquisition. The interaction between government subsidies and intellectual property rights protection has a substitution effect on both internal and external technology acquisition in the electronics and communication equipment manufacturing industry.Second, for China's high-tech industries, foreign technology purchases have significantly promoted industrial innovation performance, and domestic technology purchases have no significant impact on innovation performance. There are significant positive correlations between the two types of technology spillover channels, that is,exporting and inter-industry R&D spillovers, and innovation performance. In foreign-funded enterprises, internal R&D plays a significant role in promoting innovation performance. There is a significant positive correlation between domestic technology purchases and innovation performance. The two channels of technology spillovers, exporting and inter-industry R&D spillovers between industries play an important role in innovation performance. In state-owned enterprises, internal R&D still plays an important role in promoting innovation performance.Among the two cha'nnels of technology purchase, only foreign technology purchases have an important role in promoting the innovation performance of state-owned enterprises, and domestic technology purchases have not found significant effects on innovation performance. There is a significant positive correlation between the two channels of technology spillovers and innovation performance.Third, the stronger the absorptive capacity of high-tech industries, the more significant the role of foreign technology purchases in promoting innovation performance. And the stronger the absorptive capacity of high-tech industries, the inter?industry R&D spillover among industries is not conducive to the improvement of innovation performance. For foreign-funded enterprises, the interaction between absorption capacity and domestic technology purchases has a significant positive effect on innovation performance.Absorptive capacity is positively strengthening the positive relationship between exporting and innovation performance, indicating that the tacit knowledge obtained from exporting is effective for enterprises to form competitive advantage;while the stronger the absorptive capacity, the inter-industry R&D spillover among industries has a negative correlation with innovation performance. For state-owned enterprises, the absorptive capacity is enhanced, which can effectively promote the positive effect of foreign technology purchases, exporting on innovation performance.Like foreign-funded enterprises, the interaction between absorptive capacity and inter-industry R&D spillovers is significantly negative, indicating that the stronger the absorption capacity, the negative impact of R&D spillovers on innovation.
