| This dissertation is a study of the implications of creativity research for the practice of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level in both online and face-to-face environments. Critiques of education have focused on the instrumental or "reproductive" approach. The current study addresses the role of creativity, which, according to theorists like Friedman, Montuori, Lovitts, and others, is a key factor in transforming education.The focus is specifically on integrating the findings of what is now an extensive body of creativity research into teaching practice so as to foster creativity in the classroom. The objective is to develop independent thinkers and researchers and not just good "course takers."After outlining the context of education today, the role of creativity in education, and the relevant creativity research, the dissertation presents teaching and learning episodes from my own experience as a teacher to illustrate and reflect on the application of creativity research. It addresses the actual practice of teaching with its possible pitfalls as well as opportunities. In the conclusion, it considers the broader implications of creativity research for education. |
