Abstract/Summary:
This mixed methods study was conducted to investigate a comprehensive analysis of legal literacy of educators in Texas. Findings from this study affirm that pre-service teachers feel inadequately prepared to face legal issues in the classroom. Other findings include the fact that in-service teachers are legally illiterate regarding federal and state case law, regulations, and policies. Further, administrators must learn the process for investigating and implementing legal rules and guidelines from personal experiences or mentors. Based on the findings from face-to-face interviews and survey, specific conclusions are discussed in terms of the research questions that guided the study. The findings of this study have direct implications for pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, administrators, teacher education programs, principal preparation programs, school districts, and state educator guidelines.
