The manufacturing industry,as the mainstay of China’s industry, carries the strategic goal of elevating our nation from a major manufacturing country to a manufacturing powerhouse and plays a pivotal role in the high-quality development of China’s economy. With the increasingly severe environmental conditions, the extensive development model characterized by "high input, high consumption, and high pollution" has resulted in significant bottlenecks for the manufacturing industry, necessitating a transition to green development. However, due to the acceleration of globalization and the increasing complexity of technology, market competition has shifted from individual enterprises to the entire supply chain, resulting in the development bottleneck faced by the manufacturing industry cannot be solved by relying on the manufacturing enterprises alone. Therefore, breaking through organizational boundaries and actively seeking green collaboration with supply chain partners has become a necessary move for manufacturing enterprises to respond to changes, break the deadlock, and open up new horizons. In this context, there is a practical necessity and urgency to implement and carry out green supply chain integration. In recent years, academic attention and discussion on green supply chain integration have increased, but the existing literature still lacks systematic and comprehensive research on green supply chain integration.Firstly, green supply chain integration is the behavioral choice of corporate green practices. Most scholars focus on the impact of various factors on the final green supply chain integration behavior and outcomes of green supply chain integration, and few scholars focus on the generation of willingness prior to green supply chain integration behavior. Therefore, the motivation for the formation of corporate green supply chain integration willingness remains a "black box" in the field of green supply chain integration research.Secondly, few studies have been able to provide definitive answers to the question of how to choose an green supply chain integration approach that matches firms’ resource conditions, which has become a key issue that needs to be resolved in the field of green supply chain integration research.Thirdly, under the dual constraints of the demand for high-quality economic development and the carrying capacity of the ecological environment, not enough attention has been paid to the question of whether and how green supply chain integration can influence corporate green innovation performance, which fails to clearly understand the specific process by which green supply chain integration affects green innovation performance. In view of this, around the issue of green supply chain integration in manufacturing companies, this study attempts to solve three core questions:(1)What is the impact mechanism of institutional pressures on corporate green supply chain integration willingness?(2)What is the impact mechanism of slack resources on corporate green supply chain integration approach?(3)Can green supply chain integration improve corporate green innovation performance? What is the intrinsic mechanism between them? To answer the above questions, this research designed and carried out three distinct and logically sequential sub-studies based on the Theory of Planned Behavior,Resource-Based Theory, and Resource Orchestration Theory.Study 1 aims to examine the impact of institutional pressures on green supply chain integration willingness as well as explore the moderating role of executives’ green awareness and self-efficacy.The empirical results show that both forms of institutional pressure,i.e.,coercive pressure and normative pressure, have a significant positive effect on firms’ green supply chain integration willingness, and coercive pressure has a stronger impact. In addition, executives’ green awareness positively moderates the relationship between coercive pressure and firms’ green supply chain integration willingness, and normative pressure on firms’ green supply chain integration willingness.Furthermore, executives’ self-efficacy positively moderates the relationship between normative pressure and firms’ green supply chain integration willingness.Study 2 aims to explore the impact of slack resources on corporate green supply chain integration approach while considering the moderating role of supply chain network power in this process. The empirical results show that the choice of green supply chain integration approach adopted by manufacturing enterprises closely relates to their slack resources.Specifically, sedimentary redundant resources negatively affect internal green supply chain integration but positively affect external green supply chain integration.Non-sedimentary redundant resources positively affect internal green supply chain integration but negatively affect external green supply chain integration. This indicates that when manufacturing enterprises have a larger amount of sedimentary redundant resources, they tend to lean more towards selecting and implementing external green supply chain integration. In contrast, when they have a larger amount of non-sedimentary redundant resources, they tend to lean more towards selecting and implementing internal green supply chain integration. In addition, the study found that supply chain network power enhances the negative effect of sedimentary redundant resources on internal green supply chain integration and the positive effect of sedimentary redundant resources on external green supply chain integration, but weakens the negative effect of non-sedimentary redundant resources on external green supply chain integration.Study 3 further extends and expands on Study 1 and Study 2,aiming to explore the effect of green supply chain integration approach on corporate green innovation performance, the mediating role of green resource reconfiguration capability,as well as the moderating role of green supply chain integration willingness between green supply chain integration approach and green resource reconfiguration capability. The empirical results show that two types of green supply chain integration approach,i.e.,internal green supply chain integration and external green supply chain integration, have a significant positive effect on firms’ green innovation performance, and external green supply chain integration has a stronger impact. In addition, two dimensions of green resource reconstruction capability,i.e.,green resource reallocation capability and green resource recombination capability, play a partially mediating role in the path of green supply chain integration approach influencing firms’ green innovation performance, and the mediating effect of green resource reallocation capability is more significant.Additionally, green supply chain integration willingness positively moderates the relationship between green supply chain integration approach and green resource reallocation capability, and between green supply chain integration approach and green resource recombination capability,as well as positively moderating the mediating effect on green resource reallocation capability and green resource recombination capability. This study has the following innovative points and theoretical contributions:Firstly, this study explores the mechanism of institutional pressures on green supply chain integration willingness from the perspective of the Theory of Planned Behavior, which not only enriches the antecedent research of green supply chain integration willingness but also expands the application scope of the Theory of Planned Behavior. The existing research mainly focuses on the impact of various factors on the final green supply chain integration behavior and outcomes of green supply chain integration, with little attention being paid to the generation of willingness prior to green supply chain integration behavior. This study incorporates institutional pressures, executives’ green awareness, and executives’ self-efficacy into the same framework, and systematically presents the "joint effect" of multi-level factors on firms’ green supply chain integration willingness, which not only addresses the gaps in existing literature concerning the antecedents of supply chain integration willingness but also deepens the understanding of the mechanism for the formation of the willingness to firms’ green supply chain integration.Secondly, this study discusses the influence mechanism of slack resources on firms’ green supply chain integration approach by combining the Resource-Based Theory, thus complementing the theoretical research related to slack resources and green supply chain integration.Currently, there is a dearth of research dissecting the logical relationship between slack resources and firms’ green supply chain integration approach, leaving existing studies ill-equipped to offer effective theoretical guidance for manufacturing enterprises embarking on green supply chain integration practices.Based on existing research, this study explores the impact of different types of slack resources on firms’ green supply chain integration approach, which not only clarifies the mechanism of the role of slack resources on firms’ green supply chain integration approach but also provides valuable insights for manufacturing enterprises to choose appropriate green supply chain integration approach according to their resource conditions.Thirdly, this study examines the mechanisms by which green supply chain integration approach and green supply chain integration willingness influence firms’ green innovation performance, thus deepening bridging the theoretical gap between green supply chain integration and green innovation performance and deepening our understanding of the relationship between them.In recent years, the importance of green supply chain integration has gradually received the attention of scholars, but in general, existing research has not given adequate attention to whether and how green supply chain integration affects green innovation performance, thus failing to clearly understand the specific process by which green supply chain integration affects green innovation performance.Based on the resource orchestration perspective, this study examines the impacts of green supply chain integration approach on firms’ green innovation performance, the mediating role of green resource reconfiguration capability, and the moderating mechanism of green supply chain integration willingness between green supply chain integration approach and green resource reconfiguration capability, which not only elucidates the potential mechanisms through which green supply chain integration affects firms’ green innovation performance but also provides theoretical references and practical guidance for the manufacturing enterprises to enhance their green innovation performance through the application of green supply chain integration. |
