In order to meet the demand of the service life and improve the strength and stiffness of mill housing, as well as bring the property of materials into full play, this thesis studies the mill housing through modern design theory and method, which are based on through analysis of researches home and abroad.First, with M.D.stone formula, rolling forces of different materials and passes are calculated, and sample of the rolling forces is analyzed statistically. The result is analyzed by hypothesis testing, thus the load spectrum of mill 1200 is got.Second, with finite element software ANSYS5.7 as its instrument and the average force of load spectrum as its assumed load, a finite element simulation of three-dimension model of the mill housing is conducted. The deformation and stress at any element or node can be obtained, therefore, the dangerous point of the mill housing can be found.Third, with the stress and deformation obtained through finite element simulation as its constraint condition, together with model of three dimensions and optimization technology, optimum design of the mill housing is conducted. The main dimensions of the mill housing can be determined through the optimization. At last, this thesis applies reliability theory to analyze the mill housing after the optimization. On the one hand, the stress distribution and longtitudinal deformation distribution are calculated through Monte-carlo method, and the maximum longtitudinal deformation is checked; then with stress-strength interference model, the static strength reliability of the dangerous point is calculated. On the other hand, the mill housing works under pulsating load, so the fatigue damage can take place. With Miner formula and the P-S-N curve of the mill housing, fatigue life is predicted through being programmed in FORTRAN language.
