The fast innovation in microprocessor and communication technology has drastically boosted the development in power system protection. On the other hand, power system itself also calls for more reliable protective relay devices. Limited by hardware technology, former protection sets have the following problems, inflexible configuration, inconvenient communication, no 'user friendly'man-machine interface, limited resources, complicated wiring, etc. Based on the advantages of modern protective relay devices, this paper presents the idea of microprocessor-based protection intelligent master station, which serves as a central manager of each component of the device, and effectively relieves the restriction of limited resources. Each unit module is designed to certain standard, and the types of units are as few as possible, which greatly increases the flexibility of configuration. To make communication management faster, more reliable, and more convenient, a CAN bus network is embedded, connecting every unit together.
