These years, Both central government and local government are paying more and more attention to the conservation of historic towns, including Shanghai government. With the development of the related laws in this field, the conservation practices put in the downtown area of Shanghai has made a big progress, and now more practices are putting into the historic towns and villages in the whole of suburb areas of Shanghai. Compared with the downtown area, suburb areas have great differences in many aspects, such as the environments of geography, economy, society, and culture, etc. the same is to the measures and strategies of conservation, so it is essential for us to do some research on the conservation of suburb areas. The thesis chose Qingpu district as research object, which is the most representative area in the suburb of Shanghai and where there have many kinds of historic towns. Through a great deal of fieldwork, research work, and interview to seven historic towns of Qingpu, this thesis will discuss three issues: the main characters, the general situation of conservation , and the main problems existing in these historic towns. These historic towns not only reserve a local scene composed with bridges, rivers, and houses, but also preserve a large amount of historic heritages, all of which have a high value to be conserved. Because they are also a proof to the local culture in the south area of Changjiang river, they are rare treasure to Shanghai from a point of culture.Since 1949, the conservation of these towns have gone through three stages: at the beginning, simply protected the listed buildings and sites in law;then added the conservation of the historic and cultural towns;today conserve the historic town as an integrity, now a conservation system containing various elements has been constructed, and conservation tasks have been practiced and developed in all historic towns. However, conservation cannot avoid meeting with problems because of the complicated economy, society, and culture environments around the historic towns. These problems not only includes the restoration and management of heritage, but more of them are the negative affections arousing from the setting's quick changes, to the economic, social, and cultural development of historic towns and villages. At the end of this thesis, the view point is transferred from Qingpu district to the whole suburb area of Shanghai, and basing on the analysis above, the author summarize some strategies to the conservation of historic towns which lie in the suburb area of Shanghai. Firstly, we must improve and develop the technology and management measures of conservation. On the other hand, more important, we should emphasis the significance that conservation should be cooperate with the development of local economy, society, and culture, and make the conservation to the historic towns achieve a sustainable development through developing distinctive industry, improving the quality of community, renewing and renovating the historic towns gradually, and reconstructing community and neighborhood culture, etc.
