As a popular form of light steel structures, portal frame is widely used at resent. Many portal frames are designed with tapered sections to adapt to the change of bending moment and to save the steel. This paper discusses problems of the structural calculation, optimum design and drawing of the structure. The paper puts forward a set of schemes which deals with portal frame engineering via a piece of computer software. In this thesis, development and studies on portal frame structure CAD software are made on the base of existing achievement . This is a try of how object-oriented technology applies in the field of structure project software designing.The system also employs the C/C++ programming technique under the Windows operating system, the MFC foundation class library, AutoCAD developing tool-Object ARX and other techniques. ObjectARX is a kind of brand-new AutoCAD secondary developing instrument using object-oriented method. It make secondary development of AutoCAD convenient and powerful with the aid of development environment of Visual C++. The system is established using the object-oriented programming method, it has relatively high stability and efficiency.The system has two modules, they are design&calculation module and plotting module. The design&calculation module mainly performs the pre-process tasks such as collecting data by dialog boxes, checking the validity of the data, structural calculation and optimum design with the data. The plotting module plots the drawings in the AutoCAD environment based on the data exported from the design&calculation module and forms computing sheet .
