As well known as the Great Wall, the Grand Canal, connecting Beijing and Hangzhou, is one of the greatest projects in ancient China. It has many historical legacies and affluent cultural meanings. Hangzhou city is located at the south end of the Great Canal. The canal nurtured Hangzhou and supported its prosperity since a long time ago.While, with the weakening of its transportation function, the Hangzhou part of the Great Canal lost its former prosperity: the commercial facilities, generated with the ship transportation, became stagnant, and a lot of historical and cultural landscapes disappeared. Meanwhile, the water environment is severely deteriorated with the emission of the polluted industrial and living water into the canal. The evolution of the land use function and the construction of different times resulted in the juxtaposition of buildings of low value. The economic, environmental, historical and cultural value has been neglected.Upon the 21st century, fortunately, the government of Hangzhou began to realize the potential value and practical problem of the canal. The integrated renovation of the Hangzhou part of the Grand Canal is ranked among the ten great projects in Hangzhou's pursuit of metropolis construction. It has been effectively renovated with three objects. The first object is to apply for the world cultural legacy; the second is to make Hangzhou the world-class resort for travelers; the third is for the benefit of the citizen.Undoubtedly, the integrated renovation of the Grand canal in Hangzhou is closely related with its goal to "build metropolis and new heaven". The research of this field could help us to understand this relation better. Therefore, investigation has been carried out on the location analysis, current problems, the relation between historical renovation and city development, the goal, principle, and progress of current scheme.
