As the development of microprocessor technology, quantities of microprocessor-based IED appeared in the field of substation automation, which brought not only the convenience to the integration of substation automation, but the problem of interoperability, that is, for the communication protocol adopted by respective manufacturers or the same manufacturer at the different periods will be different, and the interchange of information must depend on the protocol convert, and the cost of system communication will increase, the function of this system will be affected, the flexibility of users when they select the projects of system solutions will be lower, and the upgrading of the system's function will be damaged, too.To accustom the rapid development of substation automation technology, on the base of data pro-type of UCA2.0 and according to many concerned standards, IED make the first whole international communication standard system on substation automation system, that is, IEC61850. By adopting modeling object-oriented, abstract communication service interface and XML technology, this standard realize the interoperability between the different manufacturers' IED, and by introducing the mechanism of specific communication service mapping, the standard can keep up with the rapid development of communication technology without losing its stability.Firstly, this paper deeply analyzed the IEC61850, which includes the aim analysis of the interoperability and points out the interoperability aim can be divided into the interoperability between IEDs, the interoperability between automation functions, and the latter is actually the capability emphasized by the interoperability of IEC61850, as well as the applied value; the specific solutions to interoperability between the automation functions are modeling object-oriented and abstract communication service interface analysis, whose natures is the standardization of communication data and communication service; another key to realize the interoperability of IEC61850 is the configuration management analysis, thus the features of IED IEC61850- based comes out.
