After several decades'development, substation automation technology has gained great achievement. However, there are still some shortcomings, for example, different manufacturers adopt different communication protocols, it influences the communion of information and interoperability. In order to conquer this problem, IEC has established the substation automation system communication network standard, namely IEC 61850, after a thorough consideration on future substation automation system functions and requirements especially concerning the interoperability. It has provided a way for different manufacturers'IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) to realize the interoperability and the system'seamless integration. The paper discusses the research of microcomputer-based feeder protection IED based on IEC61850.Based on introducing the background, content, motivation, and actuality of the research, the paper analyzes the characteristics of IEC61850, which contain configuration of substation automation, performance requirement of communication network, information modeling of object oriented, ACSI and SCSM. Though combining interoperability experiment report of IED and deficiency of IED which gained in the interoperability experiment of IED, we conclude outline and characteristics of IED that implement interoperability and characteristics. Microcomputer protection equipment is the most important IED in substation automation so that it is one of crucial technology that designing micro-computer protection device based on IEC 61850.The paper takes microcomputer-based feeder protection device as a example, completing modeling of microcomputer-based feeder protection device by using the way of modeling which defined in IEC61850, it contains modeling of logical node and data, logical device and service of communication, then use extensible Markup Language (XML) describing the model. The paper conquers the questions that exist in microcomputer protection equipment satisfying interoperability and concludes the step of designing microcomputer protection equipment based on IEC61850. The defect and shortages of the work are summarized in the end.
