Dominative principles of campus planning are the clarity of functionality, the rationality of streamline and the consecution of form, which play important roles in constructing campuses recently. However, after several years when people review those campuses, it is sad that many "sound" campuses are most likely to be dull and lifeless. This dissertation tries to address this problem to some extent based on the methodology of analogism between aggregations.Aggregation, a way to create system, is characterized by clustering and dynamic evolution. As far as the commonness of system concerning, two aggregations, campus and settlement, could be substituted abstractly by each other by analogizing. There is a kind of organic traditional settlements that feature largely in spontaneously-shaped erose form, i.e. wriggling streets, organic architectural layout and external space with random figure. In terms of this organic schema, this dissertation proposed a model: settlement-like campus that is planned intentionally. Many real cases are studied in order to characterize the models and conclude some planning approaches. The research is expected to serve for the plan and design of flexible and vivid and organic campus. The dissertation is organized as follows:It firstly analyzes traditional settlements and its organic pattern so that two organic patterns of campus form are proposed.Secondly a few cases of the ancient settlement-like campus namely the naturally-formed organic pattern are studied. Its typical examples are some campuses with long history where units connect closely representing an organic order due to the progress of campus. And then traits of the sort of ancient campuses such as their texture and the organization of composed elements and the sight are presented.Thirdly the modern settlement-like campus namely the planned organic pattern is discussed in detail. In fact this model is a design approach of the campus that focuses on representing organic brief by actively imitating the settlement. The paperdiscusses analogies between the campus and the settlement in two aspects: an analogy between their external form and a metaphor for their internal structure.Fourthly, since the planned organic pattern is a design approach, the subjective intention of designers is vital to creating specific campus. So that three design tendencies of settlement-like campus are provided: humanism, localism and design interest. The major task of humanism is to build human-centered sites in settlement space. Localism devotes to local interests and customs. And design interest indicates the architect's individual notion of a special settlement as well as his favorite form. Finally seven planning principles of the campus aggregation are concluded from point of view of the settlement followed by a short discussion for the future work.
