P.Jolad Reservoir in Thailand is a multi-purpose reservoir with the objective of irrigation, flood control, water supply and so on. It plays an important role in the Pasak area. The operation results for P.Jolad Reservoir considers not only the water demand quantity of vicinal irrigation area, the ability of flood control, but also the benefit that P.Jolad Reservoir may bring about.P.Jolad Reservoir has many problems in its current operation. When there was a big storm in 2002, floods occurred in the downstream area. However, this dam can not provide enough water supplies for irrigation area in dry seasons. The existing rule curve of the reservoir needs to revise to supply irrigation demand desired and to reduce fold damages. Compare with other traditional methods, such as HEC-3 and Standard Operating Policy (SOP), this study developed a reservoir operational rule curve by genetic algorithm optimization for P.Jolad Reservoir to release water for irrigation with maximum net benefit subject to constraints on water shortage and flood damage problems. This study has three scenarios (75%, 85% and 100% of all irrigation area). The results of simulation from genetic algorithm model were compared with HEC-3 model and SOP. From simulation, it shows the advantages of application of genetic algorithm optimization in reservoir optimal operation.
