As a self-adjusting mechanism of the urban, urban renewal will have an important effect on the urban development in the future. With the advancing of time, urban renewal has become a public policy of renaissance which covers social, economic, cultural and material environments. Facing more comprehensive goals and contents, the main problem to be solved currently is not a technical one, but an issue of decision-making, that is, how to constitute strategies of urban renewal that can reflect advanced values and can also provide comprehensive, scientific and effective guidance to the practice of urban renewal. Chengguan District is the central district and the traditional district of Lanzhou, the systematical research on the strategies of urban renewal in Chengguan District can provide a potent gist to the practice of the urban renewal of the whole Lanzhou.Firstly, the author defines some key concepts such as urban renewal and its strategy. Then the author makes a summarization of development processes of urban renewal in Western countries, UK for instance, and, Hong Kong and mainland China. Then by reviewing and reflecting the history of urban planning, construction and urban renewal, the author points out the current problems of urban renewal in Chengguan District. The contents of this part establish a theoretical foundation for the research of the strategy of urban renewal in Chengguan District.Based upon above analysis, the author makes a thorough investigation on the targets, the objects, the patterns and the participant system of urban renewal. Then the author defines the strategies of urban renewal in Chengguan District, and put such strategies into the practice of every renewal object, in order to provide a deeper and more effective guidance to the practice of urban renewal in Chengguan District. This part is the core of the whole thesis.Finally, in order to ensure that the strategies of urban renewal of Chengguan District can be put in practice effectively, and the practice of urban renewal in Chengguan District can go smoothly, the author constructs the guarantee mechanism of urban renewal from the perspective of policy, fund, planning and organization.
