After becoming a municipality, Chongqing has gone through a rapid development. Its urban population increases continuously, together with its urban area. To cater for the residential need of the community, Chongqing's residential development, which includes both new residential development and the old regeneration, is given a lot of emphasis. Due to certain historical and geographical reasons, the old residential buildings were preserved while other new areas were built in 1980s and 1990s; however, they all could not meet the need of the community. So, the residential district renewal is very important. This paper summarizes the regeneration development of Chongqing's old residential areas in the last ten years, raises a new development model-- auto-regeneration, and therefore, hopes to provide some meaningful suggestions to Chongqing's future residential regeneration. This thesis can be divided into four sections:Section one, which includes chapter one and two, is the comprehensive description of the framework, together with its relevant theories and practice. Chapter one mainly provides with the research background, the meaning of this research, objectives and methodologies; this chapter also gives the guidelines to the definition of the regeneration of the old residential areas. Chapter two summarizes its theories, and its practice and development both in China and overseas. The second section, which includes chapter three and four, reviews the current condition and regeneration of Chongqing's old residential areas. Basing on field work, chapter three not only summarizes the current condition of Chongqing's old residential area, but also analyzes its motive, to change another word, the'power'to regenerate. Chapter four details the regeneration history of old residential areas in Chongqing downtown; together with abundant research outcomes, this chapter also analyzes problems existed in regeneration.Section three is the main part of this thesis, including chapter five and six. Through analyzing the regeneration development of Chongqing's old residential areas, two models are raised and explained in detail in chapter five: protective regeneration model, and removing and rebuilding model. The auto-regeneration model, which is provided in chapter six, can be considered as the supplement of these regeneration models. Section four only includes chapter seven, providing with the conclusion of this thesis and the expectation from the author.
