Waxy corn is being gotten more and more attention by people due to its advantages of high nutritive value, good taste, easy to digest and absorb, special forage value, wide applications and high planting efficiency. With the extensive cultivation area of waxy corn year by year, and constantly increasing requirement of people for varieties and quality of waxy corn, waxy corn possess broad market prospects on its variety breeding, production and industrialization development. But now there are still problems to deal with, such as single varietal type, further improvement for quality, yield and so on. So it is an important research field to explore new methods on table waxy corn breeding, and to breed new varieties with good palatability, high yield and strong disease-resistant in China. The study put forward the waxy corn breeding objectives and strategies based on systematical description of industrial actuality and study situation of its breeding and culture technique both at home and abroad. Breeding process, characteristics, yield and resistant performance of new variety "QIANJIANG NUO 1" were summarized using the basic theory and method of systematically waxy corn breeding. The supporting techniques and cultivation technology were studied through a series of tests which had instructive significance to further breeding of new waxy corn variety and extension of "QIANJIANG NUO 1"."QIANJIANG NUO 1" is a new table waxy corn combining of middle maturity and high yield, which bred by Hangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences and passed the Audit of Crop Breeding Evaluation Committee of Zhejiang Province in 2006. Its female parent N621 and male parent N315 were derived from inter-varietal crossing of different waxy corns. Progenies got inbred lines by means of successive inbreeding and directive breeding. The variety is marked with middle growth period, high yield potential and double spike rate. The grain is white with good taste, waxy endosperm quality and marketability. Moreover, the variety is resistant to stalk rot and moderately resistant to corn northern leaf blight, but susceptible to corn southern leaf blight and Pyrausta nubilalis (Hubern).Effects of cultivation density and fertilization on yield of "QIANJIANG NUO 1" were investigated. The results showed that the plant height increased, but double ear ratio and thousand seed weight decreased as plant density and fertilizer levels were increased. Density was the most critical factors of yield in corn production. There was no linear positive correlation density relationship among density, fertilizer level and yield. In low level of nitrogen conditions, yield increased with planting density increased. But, with high level of nitrogen condition, yield decreased as planting density increased instead. This variety had strong growth vigor and high plant. The relationship between individual dominance and population heterosis should be paid attention to coordinating, giving consideration to double spike rate and ear marketability while improving the yield. Proper and elaborate seedling, rational close planting, strengthening field management and timely harvesting were key points in cultivation. Spring sowing was usually in late March, and autumn sowing was carried out from July 20 to August 10 in Zhejiang areas. The best combination of density and fertilizer operations was 3400 strains in 667m2 with topdressing Ammonium bicarbonate 50kg.The seed production of "QIANJIANG NUO 1" should be segregated and concentrated planting. Male parental was seeded 5d later than female parental in the first phase and 10d later than female parental in the second phase. Male and female parental row ratio was 1:5~6. The field density was 4500 plants per 667m2.
