Objective: To study the patterns of the expression of pituitary tumor transforming gene(PTTG) and basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) gene in acute leukemia(AL) and multiple myeloma(MM) and to investigate the function of PTTG and b-FGF in tumorogenesis, in tumor invasion and metastasis, as well as the relationship of their expression with prognosis in AL and MM.Methods: Expression of PTTG and b-FGF were detected by means of immunocytochemistry in 53 cases of AL, in 46 cases of MM and 15 cases nomal marrow tissue as controls. The results were analysised statistically. Results: the expression of PTTG and b-FGF in AL group was higher than the control group significantly (P<0.01). In AL group, after chemotherapy, the expression of incipient group is higher than complete remission group significantly (P<0.01). The correlation of PTTG and b-FGF is positive (r=0.61, P<0.01); the expression of PTTG and b-FGF in MM group were higher than the control group significantly (P<0.01), the positive expression rates of PTTG and b-FGF in MM group and control group were 63.0% and 6.67%(P<0.05), 67.4% and 13.3%(P<0.05), respectively. The expression of PTTG and b-FGF were closely related to Durie-Salmon stage(P<0.05).Conclusions: Up-regulation of PTTG and b-FGF expression maybe involved in the progression of MM and AL, correlated closely with therapeutic effect. Associated detection of PTTG and b-FGF may help to judge the malignant degree and prognosis of AL and MM.
