Objective: To investigate the possible effects of p73, p63 and p53 during the progression of larynx squamous cell carcinoma, and to provide value clues for searching and developing new approaches to clinical diagnosis and therapy for larynx squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: Immunohistochemistry method for detecting p73, p63 and p53 protein expression in the tissues of larynx squamous cell carcinoma(50 cases),atypical hyperplasia of larynx mucosa (10 cases) and normal mucos related to larynx squamous cell carcinoma(10 cases). Results: (1)The positive rate of p73 was 0%,80% and 64% respectively in normal tissue , atypical hyperplasia tissue and larynx squamous cell carcinoma tissue. Expression of p73 was significantly and positively associated with the lymph node metastasis(p<0.05),but no distinct difference with pathology differentiation ,tumor region, age, sex and. clinical stage in 50 cases of larynx squamous cell carcinoma .(2) The positive rate of p63 was 100%,100% and 92% respectively in normal tissue , atypical hyperplasia tissue and larynx squamous cell carcinoma tissue. Expression ofp63 was significantly and negatively associated with clinical stage(p<0.05,), but no distinct difference with pathology differentiation ,turnor region, sex and age in 50 cases of larynx squamous cell carcinoma .(3) The positive rate of p53 was 0%,60% and 84% respectively in normal tissue , atypical hyperplasia tissue and larynx squamous cell carcinoma tissue. Expression of p63 had no distinct difference with clinical parameters .(4) Expressions between p73 and p63 showed significantly correlation(p<0.05),however no noticeable relationship was found between p73 or p63 and p53 expressions. Conclusions: (l)It is possible that the overexpression of p73 in larynx squamous cell carcinoma is correlated with lymph node metastasis.(2)It is possible that tumors with overexpression of p63 are correlated with relatively lower malignancy (3) It is possible that p53 family is correlated with formation of larynx squamous cell carcinoma in early stage.(4)p73 and p63 cooperate possibly during the progression of larynx squamous cell carcinoma.(5) It is possible that three genes is mutual independence and complementarity in functions.
