Objective To investigate the levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β),interleukin-8(IL-8),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),prostaglandin E2(PGE2) in expressedprostate secretion(EPS) of chronic prostatitis(CP) patients and to evaluate thesignificance to the type, pathogenesis and diagnosis of CP.Methods IL-1β,IL-8,TNF-α,PGE2 levels were measured in EPS of 100 CPpatients and 20 normal controls by radioimmunoassay. Urine and EPS were culturedaccording to Meares-Stamey methods. NIH-CPSI(NIH-Chronic prostatitis symptomindex)was performed by every patient.100 CP patients were divided into 3 types:Ⅱ(n=11),Ⅲa(n=66)Ⅲb(n=23).Results The levels of IL-1β,IL-8,TNF-α,PGE2 in typeⅡgroup were higherthan typeⅢa,Ⅲb and control group(p<0.01), in typeⅢa group was higher than intypeⅢb group and control group(p<0.01). There was no statistically significantdifference between typeⅢb group and control group(p>0.05). There was a positivecorrelation between the levels of IL-1βand TNF-α, PGE2(r=0.563,r=0.826,p<0.05).There was also a positive correlation between WBC count in EPS and IL-8level(r=0.547, p<0.01).The levels of IL-1βand PGE2 were highly related to the scoreof pain severity and/or discomfort with NIH-CPSI (r=0.506,p<0.01).But nocorrelation was found between NIH-CPSI and the levels of IL-1β,IL-8,TNF-α,PGE2.Conclusions The levels of IL-1β,IL-8,TNF-α,PGE2 are elevated in EPS of typeⅡ,Ⅲa group, and maybe mediators of inflammatory in prostate. The results indicatethat IL-1β,IL-8,TNF-α,PGE2 can serve as valuable makers for the diagnosis, typeand therapy of CP.
