Objective To investigate the clinical value of serum Vascular Endothelial growth factor (VEGF)in patients with lung carcinoma and to evaluate the prognosis. Methods serum levels of VEGF in 50 healthy controls, median age 55 years, and 100cases of lung carcinoma(including squamous cell carinoma 19cases,adenocartin carcinoma 43cases,alvelar cell carcinoma 4 cases, adenosquamous carcinoma 2cases,small cell lung cancer 27 cases, poor differentiated carcinoma 5 cases),median age 58 years, were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).The relationship between the survival time and the serum level of VEGF was analysed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Results The level of VEGF was significantly higher in patient with lung cancer than in control group(P<0.01).The serum level of VEGF had no significantly relationship with the gender, age, smoking, pathologic type(P>0.05).There was significant difference in serum level of VEGF between patients with different clinical stage(P<0.05).Survival analysis showed that the high serum VEGF was associated with a high risk of death(P<0.05).The serum level of VEGF in patients who survived less than 6months was significantly higher than those more than 6months(P<0.05).Conclusion VEGF plays an important role in diagnose and clinical stage of the patients with lung carcinoma. The serum level of VEGF may be an reliable predictor for prognosis.
