Objective: To study the relationship between the expression of Inhibitor of differentiation/ DNA binding-1(Id-1) and the expressions of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), Bcl-2 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA); and the potential roles of Id-1 in the carcinogenesis of CRC.Method: 103 cases of CRC specimens and 20 cases of adjacent non-tumor colorectal tissue were obtained, and 20 cases of normal colorectal tissue specimens were used for comparison. Immunohistochemical technique was applied to detect the expressions of Id-1, bFGF,Bcl-2 and PCNA.Results: The expressions of Id-1, bFGF and Bcl-2 were found in cytoplasm, while the expression of PCNA was found on cellular nucleus. The positivity rates of Id-1, bFGF,Bcl-2 and PCNA in tumor tissues were 80.6%, 78.6%,70.9% and 81.6% respectively; and were significantly higher than those in normal colorectal tissues as well as the intensity. Both Id-1 and bFGF expressions were positively correlated with the histological grade, while the positive rate of Bcl-2 and PCNA were not correlated with the tumor grade。The positive rate of Id-1 was correlated significantly with the tumor size and was not correlated with the tumor metastasis. The expression of Id-1 was positively associated with bFGF, Bcl-2 and PCNA.Conclusion: The expression of Id-1 may be involved with vascularization of CRC ,the regulation of apoptosis and proliferation of CRC cells. The results of the current study suggested that increased expression of Id-1 may play an important role in CRC size. But the expression of Id-1 was not associated with tumor metastasis .
